As he arrived at the summit on Friday, where EU leaders rallied around him in support, Zelensky said it was good to be back among allies. "Leaders, real leaders," he said, in a possible sleight to the US president.
At the summit, funding for Ukraine and helping it get through another freezing winter – its fifth since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 – topped the agenda.
The war will cost €155bn (£131bn; $174bn) next year, Zelensky told the European Council, with at least €70bn needed to come from the EU for defence and weapons.
Zelensky said that while Ukraine could produce up to three times more drones, it "simply [doesn't] have enough money for that".
A fundamental problem for Kyiv – which cannot be easily fixed – is the chronic lack of US-made Patriot missiles to defend its towns and cities.
Zelensky said he believed Europe did possess all the interceptors his country would need this winter but described them as being scooped up in a piecemeal fashion.
Zelensky also addressed Ukraine's frayed relationship with the US, saying there are "many people with good hearts in America" who want "to be allies, not to divide or humiliate Europe".
Trump has heavily criticised Zelensky for resuming strikes on Russian oil refineries earlier this week, because it could impact Moscow's ability to complete its part of the diesel deal, which will see 300,000 tonnes of diesel sent to "the American and global marketplace".
As both Russia and Ukraine continued attacking each other's energy infrastructure, Trump suddenly announced a ceasefire on the facilities last week.
Kyiv said it would stop the strikes if Russia did the same, but Moscow said it had never agreed to the deal and continued its attacks. After three days, Kyiv resumed its strikes.
Russia accuses Ukraine of attacking oil refinery after Zelensky says strikes to resume
Why Moscow is staying tight-lipped on Trump's energy ceasefire
Trump's comments about Zelensky, during an interview with US outlet Newsmax on Thursday evening, reflect the deteriorating relationship between the US and Ukraine.
The US president said he was "not a big fan of Zelensky" and that he was "not a good guy for us to deal with".
"He doesn't want to settle," Trump said. "He says he wants to settle, but he doesn't."
"As you know, Putin hates Zelensky, and Zelensky hates Putin," he added. "And when you have that kind of hatred, it's very hard to get something settled."
When asked about Ukraine's renewed strikes on Russian oil refineries, Trump said of Zelensky: "All he's doing is making the world oil price higher… There are a lot of targets that you can hit."
Trump is frustrated at Ukraine's continued targeting of Russia's oil facilities, because it affects Moscow's ability to export its diesel to America, as per the deal the US has made with Russia, in an effort to bring down fuel prices.
Since the war with Iran started in February, US fuel and especially diesel prices have skyrocketed, souring Trump's standing with the American public – something he wants to fix before next month's mid-term elections.
At a news conference after the EU summit, Zelensky was asked if he felt that Trump was using him as a scapegoat for his own political problems. After a pause, the president broke into a grin, prompting laughter from the journalists in the room.
"This is my answer," he said.
The diesel deal infuriated Zelensky, who called it a gift to Putin and on Friday said it would "put more money straight into Putin's pocket to fund this war".
His anger was further heightened earlier this week, when restrictions were placed on the US-owned Starlink internet network, which is critical for Kyiv's military abilities to defend itself.
During the slowdown on Tuesday night, there were several deadly Russian strikes on Ukraine, with residents and the government saying there was no prior warning.
On Friday, Zelensky called the slowdown a "very dangerous and unpleasant surprise", adding that Starlink speeds were still not fully restored.
The Trump administration had previously warned that it could withhold intelligence-sharing –
