Brazilian Sen. Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro<\/a> has left the country for the U.S. after having lost Sunday\u2019s presidential election<\/a> and refused to comply with a Supreme Court order \u2060to hand over his passports, two sources said.
The State Department will issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family and allow them entry into the U.S., a senior State Department official confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday afternoon.
Bolsonaro\u2019s lawyer also declined to comment.
Bolsonaro was favored to win Sunday\u2019s presidential election but ended up losing in a shock result \u2060to leftist incumbent Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da \u200bSilva<\/a>. \u2060On Monday, he was given 24 hours to hand in his passports as part of a money-laundering investigation in which \u2060he denies wrongdoing, but that deadline has lapsed, two other sources said, \u200bleading \u2060to his documents being canceled.
Fl\u00e1vio\u2019s \u200cfather, former President Jair Bolsonaro<\/a>, also went to the U.S. after he refused to concede to Lula in 2022.
He eventually returned to Brazil \u200cbut was later given a 27-year sentence for plotting \u200ca coup. His son has yet to officially concede defeat \u2014 saying on Sunday he would seek the annulment of the result over alleged voter irregularities \u2014 but his Liberal Party said \u2060on Monday it acknowledged Lula\u2019s victory.
A senior Brazilian Federal Police official said Bolsonaro has not exited the country via any regular migration point.
Right-wing influencer Paulo Figueiredo, who serves as a sort of unofficial spokesperson for the Bolsonaro family, declined to answer questions about Bolsonaro\u2019s whereabouts.
\u201cAfter months of intense work that has been unfairly thwarted, I am not in the mood to \u200cspeak to the press,\u201d he said in a message. \u201cIf I have \u200bany comments to make on any matter, I will get in \u200ctouch.\u201d
Eduardo Bolsonaro, Bolsonaro\u2019s younger brother \u2060who lives in the United States, said ahead of the vote \u2060that an election loss would require a move.
\u201cIf my brother does not win, I\u2019m in \u200cfavor that he would leave \u200bthe country,\u201d he told podcaster Steven \u200cCrowder this month.
