Republican Mike DeWine said ad featuring estranged mother of Democrat Amy Acton was \u2018wrong\u2019
Donald Trump issued a swift rebuke against Mike DeWine, Ohio\u2019s Republican governor, who on Thursday said gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy<\/a> was \u201cwrong\u201d to release an ad critical of his Democratic rival Amy Acton that featured her estranged mother.
DeWine had implored Ramaswamy to take the ad down, but hours later, Trump urged Ramaswamy to keep airing it and accused the Republican governor of disloyalty.
Acton, who has led the Republican nominee Ramaswamy in recent polls<\/a> of the governor\u2019s race, has said she has not seen her mother Donna Arthur for decades, after her mother married a man who sexually abused Acton when she was 12 years old and stayed with him even after police stepped in.
Calling the ad \u201cdeeply, deeply troubling\u201d, DeWine told reporters at the Ohio state capital. \u201cIt\u2019s wrong to run this ad,\u201d the Associated Press reported<\/a>.
\u201cI would just urge the Ramaswamy campaign to take this down,\u201d the governor added.
The video, which began circulating on social media earlier this week and which Ramaswamy\u2019s campaign later told Ohio media outlets<\/a> is their work, shows Arthur calling her daughter \u201ca liar\u201d and saying she should not be put in charge of the state. Ramaswamy\u2019s campaign said<\/a> later in the week it would spend $4m to air the ad across the state.
DeWine noted that \u201cfamily members have always historically been off limits\u201d and Acton had earlier this year mentioned<\/a> Ramaswamy\u2019s mother\u2019s involvement in an alleged \u201cpump and dump\u201d scheme, though with less prominence than the Ramaswamy ad.
On Truth Social Thursday afternoon, Trump excoriated<\/a> DeWine for his comments, saying DeWine was \u201cdisloyal to the Republican party\u201d.
\u201cHe probably wants a Dumocrat to win, and certainly doesn\u2019t want someone who will do a much better job than he is capable of doing,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cI suggested, on the other hand, that Vivek should keep it up, and let everyone listen to the mother of a defective, dishonest, and incapable Candidate, explain how the daughter is a DISASTER who, uncontrollably, lies, cheats, and steals!\u201d
Connie Luck, a spokesperson for the Republican\u2019s campaign, said: \u201cWe refuse to accept the media\u2019s double standards when Democrats have regularly used family members of President Trump, RFK Jr, and other Republicans<\/a> in ads. Voters shouldn\u2019t buy it.\u201d
Speaking to reporters in Cincinnati on Wednesday, Vice-President JD Vance dismissed criticism of Ramaswamy\u2019s campaign. \u201cWhether the ad was appropriate or not is not really my concern,\u201d Vance said.
\u201cI\u2019m a little bit disgusted when I see Republicans across the country who are whining more about that advertisement than they are about what the congressional Democrats and other Democrats want to do to the United States of America. Politics is a tough business.\u201d
In a statement released by Acton\u2019s campaign, her brother, Philip Stearns, called the ad \u201ca despicable low\u201d for Ramaswamy, and noted that he and his sister were removed from Arthur\u2019s custody after her stepfather was arrested.
The Republican US senator Jon Husted, who is facing a election bid<\/a> that could decide which party controls the chamber in the 3 November midterm elections, joined in the condemnation. \u201cI would not have run that ad,\u201d he told<\/a> the Associated Press.
His Democratic opponent, former senator Sherrod Brown, has called the video \u201cdisgusting\u201d, and said all candidates should denounce it.
Ohio\u2019s Republican secretary of state, Frank LaRose, also criticized Ramaswamy, telling the Columbus-area broadcaster ABC 6<\/a>: \u201cI probably wouldn\u2019t run an ad like that, but every candidate gets to make their own decision.\u201d
DeWine nonetheless declined to drop his endorsement of Ramaswamy in the governor\u2019s race, saying he wanted to support the \u201cfull ticket\u201d of Republican candidates in the midterms.<\/p>\n
