Trump and key allies have accused Omar of immigration fraud, and have called to expel her from the country
Federal agents searched<\/a> Representative Ilhan Omar<\/a>\u2019s home on Monday morning as part of a criminal investigation, according to the Department of Justice and <\/strong>reports in <\/strong>the Associated Press and Fox News.
In a social media post later on Monday, Omar criticized<\/a> the raid as an attempt by the Trump administration \u201cto target political enemies and weaponize law enforcement\u201d and said she would \u201cnot be silenced\u201d.
A video posted by Fox showed what appeared to be law enforcement officers in HSI jackets at what Fox News said was Omar\u2019s Washington DC<\/a> residence.
\u201cToday in the Washington DC area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,\u201d a justice department spokesperson said.
It was unclear what the nature of the warrant was. Omar\u2019s office did not respond to a request for comment, and the White House and Department of Homeland Security referred comment to the Department of Justice. Citing two unnamed sources \u201cclose to the investigation\u201d, Fox News reported that the search was related to a criminal fraud investigation concerning Omar\u2019s immigration paperwork, which her late father filled out when she was a child.
Donald Trump<\/a> and key allies have accused Omar of fraud related to her family\u2019s immigration history, fantasizing openly<\/a> about denaturalizing her and expelling her from the country.
When asked about the raid on Monday, Trump said he had \u201cnothing to do with it\u201d and the investigation is \u201cup to the DoJ\u201d.
\u201cI understand they\u2019re looking at her very carefully,\u201d Trump told reporters. \u201cI\u2019ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally, but that has nothing to do with me.\u201d
The congresswoman has consistently denied the accusations, though Trump has repeatedly made them national news with gratuitous attacks against Omar, who along with Representative Rashida Tlaib became the United States\u2019 first Muslim congresswoman in 2019.
But even amid a presidency known for political and legal<\/a> retribution<\/a> against his critics, the search of Omar\u2019s DC home just three weeks before a crucial midterm election day will surely lead to new accusations that Trump is using the government for his own political ends.
Administration officials, and the president himself, have long hinted at a federal investigation into Omar. \u201cLet\u2019s see what happens,\u201d Trump said at a rally<\/a> on Saturday after attacking Omar by name, adding that Vice-President JD Vance \u201cand our people are looking at it very strongly\u201d.
It was just the latest in months of talk about investigating Omar. Trump in December accused<\/a> her of having \u201cmarried her brother\u201d and said she \u201cshould be thrown the hell out of our country\u201d, a reference to a years-old but unsubstantiated claim that Omar sought to help her ex-husband \u2013 who they allege is really her brother \u2013 obtain immigration papers via a sham marriage.
Days later, his \u201cborder czar\u201d Tom Homan said<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019re pulling the records now,\u201d referring to Omar, and said a fraud investigator in Homeland Security Investigations, the ICE division that historically has been tasked with investigative work, would look into the matter.
In March, Vance told<\/a> the rightwing media personality Benny Johnson: \u201cWe actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud\u201d and that he had recently spoken to the top Trump aide Stephen Miller about \u201cwhat the remedies are\u201d. The homeland security secretary, Markwayne Mullin, told<\/a> Johnson last month that there was an ongoing investigation and \u201csomething\u2019s going to happen\u201d.
\u201cWe know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States,\u201d Mullin said. \u201cWe know he lives now in London. We feel that there may be more to this, the whole family migration, and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with. But all of us, we\u2019re investigating.\u201d
Soon after, Homan said<\/a> he could not \u201ccomment on an ongoing criminal investigation.
\u201cWe\u2019ll let HSI, Homeland Security Investigations continue to do their investigation,\u201d he added.
Omar\u2019s social media post after the raid on Monday said: \u201cI\u2019m OK. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.\u201d
The congresswoman also said Trump had spent years targeting her \u201cwith baseless lies and smear campaigns\u201d.
\u201cThis is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.\u201d
Omar has for years denied<\/a> unsubstantiated rumors<\/a> from Trump and others about herself and her family, including the accusation that her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, is in fact her brother, and that the marriage was part of an effort to earn him immigration status. Marriage fraud is a felony, though it has a five-year statute of limitations. Omar and Elmi formally divorced<\/a> in 2017 after separating in a religious divorce years earlier.
The New York Post last month also quoted<\/a> an unnamed \u201ctop immigration official\u201d who said \u201cthe Trump administration could initiate a denaturalization process\u201d against Omar if there is sufficient evidence that she or her father lied on immigration applications. The story noted accusations that Omar was older than her recorded age of 17 when she was naturalized, which could be relevant because she received citizenship via her parents. The report also raised questions about Omar\u2019s father, who reportedly claimed to be an educator, though his obituary later described<\/a> a military career.
As the most prominent Somali-American in the United States, Omar has faced years of racist attacks<\/a> from the president and his supporters.
Campaigning in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday, Trump said she \u201ccomes from one of the worst countries \u2060anywhere on the planet \u2026 What a mess they have done \u2013 Somalia.\u201d

Somali-Americans, especially, have borne relentless insult from the White House in Trump\u2019s second term. In December, the president referred to them as \u201cgarbage<\/a>\u201d who \u201ccome from hell, and they complain, and do nothing but bitch\u201d.
