Top House Democrats question the \u2018corrupt weaponization\u2019 of federal government against Trump\u2019s adversaries
Ilhan Omar<\/a>\u2019s Democratic<\/a> colleagues have condemned federal agents\u2019 search<\/a> of the Minnesota congresswoman\u2019s home on Monday morning, describing it as \u201cdeeply disturbing\u201d and emblematic of the Trump administration<\/a>\u2019s \u201ccorrupt weaponization\u201d of the US government.
House<\/a> Democratic leaders, including minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, party whip Katherine Clark and caucus chair Pete Aguilar, issued a joint statement excoriating the president for the search.
\u201cThe Trump administration\u2019s raid on congresswoman Ilhan Omar\u2019s home is deeply disturbing and raises serious questions about the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against [the president\u2019s] adversaries,\u201d their statement said.
\u201cFor years, Donald Trump<\/a> and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations. Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected member of Congress and her family.\u201d
The Democratic leaders vowed to \u201cdeliver full accountability for the rogue abuse of power\u201d from the US Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, the latter of which oversees immigration enforcement.
Citing unnamed sources \u201cclose to the investigation\u201d, Fox News \u2013 which is typically friendly with the Trump administration \u2013 reported<\/a> that the search on Omar\u2019s home pertained to a criminal fraud investigation concerning her immigration paperwork. Omar\u2019s late father filled out that paperwork when Omar, a Somali-born, naturalized US citizen, was a child.
California representative Ro Khanna also condemned Monday\u2019s search, saying<\/a>: \u201cIt is simply chilling that they are targeting political opponents this way, and it is disturbing that they are targeting Muslim Americans and a Muslim American legislator. Any decent American needs to stand up and speak out.\u201d
Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Khanna\u2019s fellow Democrat and California representative, called<\/a> the search \u201cfascism in the extreme\u201d.
\u201cThis is an unadulterated abuse of power,\u201d Kamlager-Dove said. \u201cTrump is weaponizing the federal government to escalate his racist attacks against [representative] Omar, undermine her ahead of the midterms<\/a> [on 3 November], and distract from his failures as president.\u201d
Pramila Jayapal, a Democratic House member from Washington state, similarly called<\/a> the search of Omar\u2019s home a \u201cdisgusting abuse of power from an out of control president\u201d facing widespread public disapproval from high living costs<\/a> amid the war in Iran that he helped start alongside Israel in February.
\u201cTo use federal law enforcement resources to raid the home of a sitting Member of Congress weeks before an election is a dangerous sign of an authoritarian president who will stop at nothing to distract you from his deep unpopularity with the American people,\u201d Jayapal added.
Jayapal\u2019s statement alluded to years of unsubstantiated rumors<\/a> from Trump<\/a> and others about Omar and her family, including the accusation that her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, is in fact her brother \u2013 and that the marriage was part of an effort to earn him immigration status. Omar has denied those rumors.

The Illinois representative Delia C Ramirez called for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to be dismantled. Omar \u201chas not backed down, so now they are using DHS and the federal government to target and persecute her\u201d, Ramirez said<\/a> in a post on X.
\u201cThis is an absolute abuse of power and unacceptable. We must strip them of their weapons. We must dismantle DHS.\u201d
Similarly, Greg Casar, a Democratic representative from Texas, wrote<\/a> that the Trump administration is targeting Omar \u201cbecause he thinks it\u2019ll help his [Republican] party\u201d during the midterms<\/a>, when it is expected to lose seats<\/a> in Congress.
\u201cIlhan Omar stands up and won\u2019t let Trump do whatever he wants to our country,\u201d Casar said. \u201cIt\u2019s up to us to do the same.\u201d
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair), the US\u2019s largest Muslim civil rights organization, also spoke out against the search of Omar\u2019s home, saying<\/a>: \u201cWe strongly condemn this unconscionable raid on her home for what it is: an obvious act of political persecution.\u201d
Criticizing the Trump administration\u2019s handling of files pertaining to Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s child sex-trafficking network as well as the president\u2019s pardons<\/a> for those who attacked the US Capitol in early 2021, Cair said the justice department \u201ccould clearly [not] care less about fighting crime and is instead focused on conducting a witch hunt\u201d.<\/p>\n
