The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a Gulfstream jet carrying six people that lost contact with flight controllers Saturday morning on its way to Boston from the island of Bermuda.
The Coast Guard said air and surface crews have launched in search of the aircraft, a Gulfstream G100 jet.
The plane was carrying out a medical evacuation in Bermuda, said Clarence Togeretz, the director of flight operations at Latitude Air Ambulance, which operates the plane.
\u201cWe always get rather concerned when our crew doesn\u2019t report to us in a timely manner,\u201d he told NBC News. \u201cBut I will say that again, optimistically and positively, that doesn\u2019t mean that the worst has happened.\u201d
Togeretz added that Latitude Air Ambulance has an emergency response plan in place \u201cabsolutely for anything that might occur to any of our missions.\u201d
Latitude Air Ambulance is a Canadian-based medical transportation company that operates specially equipped private airplanes to transport and treat the sick or injured, according to the company\u2019s website. The company serves private clients seeking bedside-to-bedside medical, patients who required advanced care not available at their originating hospital and insured patients who become critically ill or injured while abroad, according to the website.
The Massachusetts Port Authority, which operates Boston Logan International Airport, said the aircraft did not arrive as scheduled. A spokesperson said: \u201cOur thoughts are with those on board and their loved ones as the search continues.\u201d
Air traffic control tower audio from Boston, obtained by NBC News, appears to indicate that controllers asked the aircraft if it was \u201ccoming in blind.\u201d
Controllers later ask another plane to \u201cattempt contact\u201d with the jet. It is unclear whether that attempt was successful.
The current search area is \u201coff the coast of Nantucket,\u201d the Coast Guard Northeast District said in an update on X.
Emergency services audio obtained by NBC News asked vessels to keep a \u201csharp lookout\u201d for any signs of a \u201cpossible aircraft in the water.\u201d Data from Flightradar24 showed a number of aircraft searching south of the island.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that it issued a search-and-rescue notice for the jet at 1:20 a.m. ET on Saturday, and is coordinating with the Coast Guard and Rescue Coordination Center to locate the aircraft.
Bermuda is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic, about 650 miles from North Carolina.
The government of Bermuda confirmed in a post on X<\/a> on Saturday that the aircraft was reported missing.
Bermuda Premier David Burt said in a statement that his \u201cthoughts are with everyone on board and their families during this deeply worrying time.\u201d
\u201cWe are praying that all six people will be found safe, and we thank the search and rescue crews for their continuing efforts,\u201d he said.
