Waltz says Trump rejected Iran\u2019s proposal to end war because they \u2018were asking for everything up front\u2019
The Trump administration<\/a>\u2019s ambassador to the United Nations said the US rejected Iran<\/a>\u2019s proposal to end the ongoing war there because Iranian negotiators \u201cwere asking for everything up front\u201d.
Echoing comments by Donald Trump<\/a> on Saturday, the president\u2019s UN ambassador, Mike Waltz, told CNN\u2019s State of the Union on Sunday that Iran had asked for relief \u201cfrom billions and billions of sanctions that are going into place\u201d as part of an economic blockade on Iran. The blockade is aimed at putting pressure on Iran to stop its attacks \u200con vessels in the strait of Hormuz.
\u201cThey were asking for everything up front with a promise that they would then talk,\u201d Waltz said on State of the Union. \u201cThe president is just not confident that the Iranians are coming in good faith and that we will truly negotiate the end of their nuclear program.\u201d
Trump said on Saturday that he had rejected Iran\u2019s peace plan, proposed at \u2060the recent UN general assembly in New York, arguing that desperation was driving the Iranians\u2019 push for an agreement on the key waterway. \u201cThey want to make a deal \u2060to open the Hormuz strait immediately because they\u2019re losing so badly,\u201d Trump said.
Trump said the US was \u201cwinning tremendously\u201d and had \u201ctotal control of the Hormuz strait\u201d.
In comments to Axios<\/a> on Sunday, Trump said he expected more talks with Iran during the upcoming week. \u201cThey want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make,\u201d the outlet quoted the president as saying. \u201cIt is what we would have maybe agreed to a year ago. They overplayed their hand.\u201d
Earlier, Waltz pointed to the failed US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in Pakistan in June that laid out a 14-point framework agreement for a negotiated peace.
Iran, he said, \u201cimmediately violated it by attacking international shipping, in violation of international law, and 146 nations have joined us in condemning Iran for those attacks\u201d.
Iran on Sunday insisted that only diplomacy can solve its conflict with the US and Israel.
\u201cOur conditions are clear, \u200band any move toward reopening the strait of Hormuz is contingent on these conditions being met,\u201d the Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, posted on social media. \u201cOnly a negotiated solution can get them out of this deadlock.\u201d
Araghchi also appeared on NBC\u2019s Meet the Press on Sunday, saying his country was prepared to resume fighting with the US but had not yet abandoned diplomacy after Trump rejected Iran\u2019s peace proposal.
\u201cWe are fully prepared for the war to be resumed,\u201d Araghchi said. \u201cWe stand firm in the face of any new aggression, even if it comes to a doomsday war.
\u201cAt the same time, we stand ready for diplomacy. It is up to President Trump to choose.\u201d
The Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, in an interview with the CBS show Face the Nation, said his country was ready for \u200btalks on its nuclear program and other issues \u2013 but would not \u200baccept \u201cbullying or coercion\u201d.
\u201cIran is not seeking war, but will \u200bdefend itself against pressure, threats and attacks,\u201d Pezeshkian said, adding that it had already agreed that \u201cwe\u2019re not supposed to develop nuclear weapons\u201d.

On CNN, Waltz also addressed recent reports that China had assisted Iran in missile targeting of shipping in the strait of Hormuz and on US military bases in the region.
Waltz did not confirm the leaked intelligence assessments but said Trump had raised the issue with China\u2019s president, Xi Jinping, during the latter\u2019s recent state visit to the US capital Washington DC. Trump had also done so \u201cmultiple times\u201d previously, including during his visit to China in May, according to Waltz.
\u201cI think we have seen movement in a positive direction,\u201d Waltz said. \u201cPresident Trump has made it clear it\u2019s unacceptable.\u201d
Waltz pointed to readouts of the high-level meeting that said the US and China had \u201cagreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon\u201d.
\u201cThey cannot and should not be tolling, much less attacking, international shipping in an international waterway,\u201d Waltz said. \u201cSo I think that was incredibly important to hear from President Xi coming out of the summit.\u201d
Waltz also rejected reporting in the Wall Street Journal that the US would resume bombing Iran after the federal midterm elections in November. He pointed to Trump\u2019s comments that Iran was miscalculating.
\u201cThe president is looking to make not just this generation \u2013 but the next generation \u2013 safer by not allowing what is essentially a terrorist organization in [Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] that is controlling the levers of government and wants to march towards a nuclear weapon,\u201d Waltz said. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to let the IRGC have a nuclear weapon, much less hold the world hostage with one.\u201d<\/p>\n
