An umbrella group of Iran-backed militias in Iraq denied its involvement.<br \/>Iraq also closed two key border crossings with Iran, Iraq\u2019s state-run news agency reported Saturday.<br \/>Kuwait, a U.S. ally in the region, warned that the pipeline attack was a \u201cdangerous escalation that undermines the security and stability of the region\u201d while Bahrain stressed Saudi Arabia\u2019s right to \u201ctake all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty.\u201d<br \/>President Donald Trump said on \u2060Saturday that everything would \u201cwork out just \u2060fine\u201d when asked about the region on a visit to Ireland. He also said, without providing evidence, that Iran was \u201cprobably\u201d behind the pipeline attack.<br \/>The pipeline strikes came <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/middle-east\/houthi-attacks-saudi-arabia-oil-yemen-iran-war-rcna596535\" target=\"_blank\">as rebel Houthi forces<\/a><strong> <\/strong>in Yemen<strong> <\/strong>captured Perim, an island in the middle of the vital Bab el Mandeb Strait that serves as a gateway to the Red Sea trade route that links Europe and Asia.<br \/>The Houthis also captured the historic port city of Mocha this week, followed by an advance on the strategic coastal town of Dhubab and the apparent withdrawal of forces from the Saudi-backed, internationally recognized Yemeni government from Perim, also known as Mayun.<br \/>If the Houthis are able to threaten shipping along the Bab el Mandeb Strait, it could reduce oil supplies through another key waterway. Saudi Arabia has had to rely on the Red Sea route given the disruption to the Strait of Hormuz. <br \/>The Yemeni Ministry of Defense said Saturday it had carried out counterattacks against Houthi targets, hitting militants, vehicles and weaponry.<br \/>A statement issued by Houthi forces Friday said that \u201cmaritime navigation is safe for all companies except for Saudi vessels,\u201d vowing to strike Saudi targets \u201cuntil the aggression stops and the blockade against our dear people is lifted.\u201d<br \/>Trump said the Houthis had contacted the U.S. to stress that they \u201cdon\u2019t want to fight with us\u201d and would \u201cmuch prefer not having us involved.\u201d<br \/>After the dramatic developments, oil prices ended the week above $100 a barrel for the first time since mid-May.<br \/>Effective Houthi control over the Red Sea coast \u201cis a game-changer,\u201d and could give Iran powerful new leverage in its war with the United States, Fawaz Gerges, a professor of international relations at the London School of Economics, told NBC News.<br \/>He said: \u201cFar from being really besieged and bleeding, Iran now could easily increase the pain to the U.S. economy and the world economy.\u201d<br \/>Gerges said it remains to be seen whether the Houthis can maintain their control of the vast areas of the Red Sea coast, or if they \u201coverextended themselves.\u201d<br \/>But the Trump administration \u201cnow finds itself in a much more difficult position because it gambled that the blockade of Iran would force Iran to accept Trump\u2019s conditions,\u201d he added. \u201cThe reverse has happened.\u201d<br \/>Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Saturday that it would sign an agreement with Oman over a joint route through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, as part of a deal securing future navigation rights through the strait.<br \/>That deal is not expected to immediately reopen the waterway without a broader agreement with the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/iran-sets-steep-demands-reopening-hormuz-hopes-oman-deal-break-impasse-rcna591553\" target=\"_blank\">Iran has previously stressed.<\/a><br \/>The U.S. military is helping its Saudi counterparts develop and coordinate targets inside Yemen, according to a U.S. official and a person familiar with the matter.<br \/>Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is urging President Trump to take military action against the Houthis, according to a person familiar with the matter.
