URI student Emma Perun never expected her Rhody Abroad semester in South Korea to include a K-beauty commercial
KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 Sept. 11, 2026 \u2013 For students already thinking about studying abroad, or those who have never considered it, the Rhody Abroad Fair<\/a> on Monday, Sept. 14<\/strong>, is a chance to see where URI can take them.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Quad, students can explore programs in 30 countries, including the United States, with options for every major ranging from one week to a full academic year. Attendees can enter raffles to win $1,000 discounts toward future Rhody Abroad programs sponsored by the Office of International Education and a $1,000 flight voucher sponsored by WorldStrides and enjoy free food provided by the URI Department of Public Safety.
A semester of academic, cultural, and personal discovery<\/strong>
Emma Perun \u201927 knew she wanted to study abroad, but she was not sure where. While exploring her options, the animal science major on the pre-veterinary track came across a new Rhody Abroad program in Seoul, South Korea. She had never been to Asia, and that was exactly why she chose Seoul.
In Seoul, Perun took courses, completed an internship in a cytokine immunology laboratory, made friends from around the world and even appeared in a K-beauty advertisement. By the time she returned to URI, she had gained hands-on experience in her field, discovered new interests and become more confident in trying something unfamiliar.
Emma\u2019s experience in South Korea was possible through Rhody Abroad<\/a>, a group of URI-selected programs specially designed to make studying abroad more accessible and easier to fit into a student\u2019s academic journey.
For Perun, that academic fit took shape at Konkuk University. Working alongside two other international students at the laboratory, she observed research into Type 1 diabetes, practiced laboratory techniques and used what she learned to write a research paper she continues to develop.
\u201cIt definitely helped with my major,\u201d Perun said, adding that the internship also strengthened her resume as she prepares for the competitive veterinary field.
The learning continued outside the laboratory. Perun practiced ordering food in Korean, adjusted to local customs and built friendships with students from several countries. Through her Moroccan roommate and other friends, she learned about cultures far beyond the one she had traveled to experience. She described it as experiencing \u201cfive different cultures in one.\u201d
When another student asked her to appear in a K-beauty advertisement, Perun hesitated. She had never acted or worked on camera, but she decided to try.
\u201cI actually discovered a new passion that I never knew I had,\u201d she said. \u201cI loved it.\u201d
Finding a program that fits<\/strong>
For many students, cost and staying on track toward graduation can make studying abroad feel out of reach. Featured Rhody Abroad programs<\/a> and Rhody Global Campus programs are specially designed to remove some of that uncertainty and have been selected by URI to help students across all majors find a study abroad experience that fits their academic goals and budget. Students can choose from short-term (summer\/J-term), semester-long and academic-year programs, hands-on learning experiences, and other opportunities in four locations: Seoul, South Korea; Limerick, Ireland; Salamanca, Spain; and San Jos\u00e9, Costa Rica.
URI reviews each feature program and maps courses to URI coursework in advance. Reduced costs for URI students in these programs can also make studying abroad more accessible. Together, these features make it easier for students to choose an experience that supports their academic goals while earning transfer credit, gaining experience for their resume, and building connections in their field.
URI students also have an opportunity to earn URI credit while studying at Rhody Global Campuses, in partnership with WorldStrides<\/a>, in Seville, Spain<\/a>; Cusco, Peru<\/a>; and Meknes, Morocco<\/a>. Courses at these locations combine classroom instruction with hands-on learning in the surrounding communities, and the credits and grades students earn appear on official URI transcripts and count toward students\u2019 GPA. These programs can also give transfer students more flexibility when limits on transfer credits affect what they can apply toward a major, minor or degree.
\u201cExpanding Rhody Abroad advances our commitment to making global learning accessible and integral to a URI education,\u201d said Kristin Johnson, vice provost for global initiatives. \u201cWe want every student to see a place for themselves in these programs, across majors and interests. These opportunities connect academic progress with meaningful global experiences, helping students build the skills, perspectives and professional relationships essential to their future.\u201d
