The new $1 gold coins emblazoned with President Donald Trump’s face<\/a> are no longer available, at least temporarily.
The coins are listed as “currently unavailable” on the U.S. Mint’s website<\/a> Friday morning, Sept. 4, after going on sale at noon ET on Sept. 2. Multiple news outlets reported the coins were no longer available a few hours after they went on sale.
The coins make Trump the first living person featured on American currency in more than a century and can be purchased in the following quantities for the following prices, according to the U.S. Mint:
Dispersed among the bags and rolls are 250,000\u00a0coins\u00a0pressed on the Fourth of July<\/a>, with a \u201cJuly\u00a04\u201d privy mark, the Treasury said in a news release. Featuring Trump\u2019s official White House portrait, the coins were designed to commemorate the country\u2019s 250th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary.\u00a0\u00a0
The Treasury did not immediately respond to a USA TODAY request for more information on when the coins would be available for purchase again. According to reporting from CNN<\/a>, the Mint website featured a notice on the afternoon of Sept. 2 for the 25-coin roll stating the coins were “available to be ordered now, but it is not currently in stock.” The notice also said “additional inventory is being made.”
The coins are the first\u00a0released\u00a0in a slate of\u00a0Trump-adorned\u00a0currency\u00a0announced by the Treasury.\u00a0The agency has also proposed a\u00a0$250 bill<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a024K gold commemorative coin<\/a>\u00a0with the president\u2019s image.\u00a0\u00a0
Some Democrats and coin collectors have\u00a0questioned the legality of the coins<\/a>,\u00a0pointing to a federal law allowing \u201conly the portrait of a deceased individual\u201d to appear on U.S. currency and securities.\u00a0
The Treasury, however, has pointed to\u00a0a 2020 law<\/a>\u00a0allowing it to\u00a0mint a $1 coin honoring the nation\u2019s\u00a0semiquincentennial\u00a0for one year.\u00a0\u00a0
George Washington\u00a0refused to have his image printed on currency during his lifetime, believing it was “monarchical.<\/a>”\u00a0
President Calvin Coolidge was the last and only other sitting executive to appear on currency. In 1926, for the country\u2019s 150th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary, the Treasury issued a half-dollar featuring Coolidge and George Washington.\u00a0
Neither the $1 gold coin\u00a0nor\u00a0the 24K gold commemorative coin received approval from the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, a\u00a0nonpartisan group created by Congress to\u00a0advise\u00a0the treasury on coin designs. That committee\u00a0declined to review both\u00a0coins, arguing that putting a sitting president on currency\u00a0was against the country\u2019s founding principles.\u00a0\u00a0
