The trial of Lindsay Clancy that gripped headlines in recent weeks, drawing renewed attention<\/a> to the state of maternal mental healthcare in the US and postpartum psychosis, has ended with a mistrial.
This now leaves Clancy, the Massachusetts<\/a> mother accused of fatally strangling her three children in January 2023 who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, open to the possibility of a retrial with a different jury.
As the public now waits for what will happen next, here are five key takeaways from what has been called \u201cAmerica\u2019s saddest murder trial\u201d<\/a>.
Lindsay Clancy\u2019s ex-husband, 36-year-old Patrick Clancy, took the stand<\/a> as a key figure in the case, testifying about his wife\u2019s worsening mental health in the months leading up to the killings of five-year old Cora, three-year old Dawson and eight-month old Callan.
Patrick Clancy described Lindsay as a \u201cvery dedicated\u201d mother who struggled with her mental health and \u201cjust had a really hard time being separated from them\u201d.
Approximately two months before the killings, Lindsay \u201cdescribed thoughts of hurting the kids or them having some sort of ailment\u201d, Patrick Clancy testified. He said his then wife told him that she did not have a specific plan to hurt the children and did not think she needed to be separated from them.
\u201cIt was very confusing because a minute later, she was making them lunch or playing with them or getting ready for bed or whatever it was,\u201d Patrick Clancy said, adding that Lindsay was not displaying \u201cany intention\u201d of hurting the kids.
He also testified that Lindsay began expressing suicidal thoughts in December 2022, saying: \u201cShe started to say that she was suicidal.\u201d
After killing her children, Lindsay allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from her home\u2019s second-floor window which left her paralyzed from the waist down.
Sheila Cavanaugh, a chaplain at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, who met with Lindsay Clancy numerous times after the killings of her children, also testified in court.
\u201cHer emotional state was very neutral, a flat affect, but I remember vividly the first thing she said to me,\u201d Cavanaugh testified, recalling her conversation with Lindsay at the hospital where she was still \u201ccovered\u201d in tubes and wearing a neck brace.
\u201cWe had been praying together, and so when I went in on Tuesday the 31 [of January], she said to me as I held her hand to comfort her: \u2018I am so glad my children are safe,\u2019\u201d Cavanaugh said.
Cavanaugh further testified that Lindsay Clancy said she had heard a male voice several times, which \u201caccording to Lindsay, told her that if she did not follow the command, neither she nor her children would be safe\u201d.
\u201cShe alluded to the fact that it was a male voice and it was persistent,\u201d Cavanaugh said. During cross-examination, when asked why her notes did not mention the voice, Cavanaugh explained that she was \u201cnot there to evaluate the patient\u201d but instead to \u201cbear witness to their suffering\u201d.
Lindsay Clancy\u2019s mother and sister also testified about the deterioration of her mental state in the months leading up to the killings of her three children, describing increasing paranoia, insomnia and suicidal thoughts.
Paula Musgrove, Lindsay Clancy\u2019s mother, testified <\/a>that her daughter had become increasingly paranoid in the fall of 2022. Musgrove said Lindsay Clancy was afraid to sleep alone and believed the medications she was taking \u201cwere destroying her mind\u201d.
In December 2022, Musgrove testified she was in the kitchen with Lindsay Clancy and Patrick Clancy when \u201cshe told us she had thoughts of harming the children.\u201d
A text message from Lindsay Clancy to her mother shown in court also detailed her worsening condition. It read: \u201cMom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I\u2019m really sick. Something is wrong \u2026 I had horrible insomnia all night, and I just don\u2019t know how I am going to get through the day \u2026 It\u2019s just really scary, and I don\u2019t want to be alone.\u201d
Lindsay Clancy\u2019s sister, Allison Ozga, similarly testified about her sister\u2019s declining mental state. During Thanksgiving 2022, Ozga said Lindsay Clancy\u2019s \u201cmood did not look good\u201d. By December, Ozga testified that her sister \u201cvery much decompensated\u201d.
\u201cI\u2019m in a really tough spot,\u201d Ozga recalled her sister saying, adding that toward the end of December 2022, Lindsay Clancy told her she \u201chad suicidal ideation every day for a month.\u201d
Meanwhile, Lindsay Clancy\u2019s former mother-in-law, Susan Clancy, testified that Lindsay Clancy was \u201cbegging for help\u201d as her mental health struggles worsened. \u201cLindsay was struggling, we were all concerned,\u201d Susan Clancy said.
She also confirmed that her son went skiing after dropping Lindsay Clancy off at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island for treatment in December 2022.
Over 300 supporters, mostly women, rallied outside<\/a> the courthouse in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in support of Lindsay Clancy as the trial shed light on women\u2019s struggles with mental health<\/a>.
Many of the supporters wore pink with the words: \u201cBelieve\u201d, \u201cShe Needed Help\u201d and \u201cPeace For Lindsay\u201d.
Speaking to the Associated Press during the rally, April Vincent, a 52-year-old paralegal from Providence, Rhode Island, said: \u201cWomen are being dismissed, neglected and ignored when we speak up \u2026 We\u2019re scared because nobody takes us seriously.\u201d
Jeanne Zaborski, a 72-year-old retired nurse from Rockland, Massachusetts<\/a>, told the outlet from the outside of the courthouse: \u201cIt\u2019s very sad \u2026 I am a mother. I am a grandmother. I have a sister who had problems after birth and it\u2019s just very sad. I hope Lindsay gets the care she needs and deserves and other women will come together like we did today.\u201d
Lindsay Clancy and her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, have filed several civil lawsuits against doctors and hospitals involved in Lindsay Clancy\u2019s care. Lindsay Clancy alleges negligence and medical malpractice, while Patrick Clancy alleges wrongful death.
Lindsay Clancy\u2019s lawsuit <\/a>alleges that the defendants \u201ceach failed to properly diagnose Lindsay\u2019s bipolar disorder with postpartum onset and instead subjected her to a disorganized, uncoordinated course of polypharmacy that exacerbated her condition and precipitated a severe psychotic break.\u201d
