TEHRAN, Iran \u2014 <\/strong>Hostilities between the United States <\/a>and Iran <\/a>escalated overnight into Wednesday, with Tehran attacking American bases across the Middle East after a U.S. strike was alleged to have hit a home hosting a wedding event, killing five and wounding dozens.
President Donald Trump said in a<\/a> post on Truth Social <\/a>Tuesday that the U.S. had launched a wave of \u201clarge and powerful\u201d strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for what he said was a \u201cfailed attempt\u201d at laying mines along the vital trade route.
Trump told reporters at the Oval Office on Wednesday that the U.S. military could attack again.
\u201cIt was a very heavy attack last night, and we\u2019re prepared to do another one any time we want,\u201d he said.
U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM<\/a>, said Tuesday it had carried out attacks on Iranian military targets, including air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets and facilities, communication sites and mine-laying capabilities.
The Iranian Red Crescent later said five people had been <\/strong>killed and nearly 70 injured after a U.S. strike hit what it called a \u201cwedding celebration\u201d in the city of <\/strong>Kuhestak,<\/a> on the Strait of Hormuz, according to the semiofficial Fars news agency<\/a>. The regional Red Crescent said at least one child was among those killed.
NBC News was not immediately able to independently confirm the details of the strike.
In video published by the Iranian Red Crescent Society and geolocated to Kuhestak by NBC News, a building can be seen surrounded by rubble, with a gaping hole blown through its roof. Other footage appears to show a downed telecommunications tower just a few minutes\u2019 walk away from the building.
CENTCOM spokesperson Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins said he was aware of reports of civilian casualties.
The \u201cU.S. military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC,\u201d he said, referring to Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guard Corps.
In response, the IRGC said it had launched a wave of strikes targeting U.S. bases across the region, including in Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait. In a statement, the IRGC said the strikes were in retaliation to the U.S. bombing, which it described as a \u201cflagrant violation of human rights\u201d that turned what it described as an \u201cengagement\u201d event into a \u201cmourning ceremony.\u201d
The IRGC also said had targeted bases in Jordan.
In a separate statement, the IRGC said that four members of its own aerospace forces were also killed in Kermanshah, <\/strong>a city in the central district of Kermanshah province, in U.S. strikes overnight, the semiofficial Tasnim news agency reported.
\u201cMake no mistake: these crimes will not go unpunished,\u201d Ebrahim Azizi, chairperson of the Iranian parliament\u2019s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on X<\/a>.
If the Islamic Republic retaliates, Trump had warned, \u201cthey will be hit again at a much harder and higher level, but it will not be the biggest attack of them all, that is waiting in the wings.\u201d When that is over, he added, \u201cthere will be very little left\u201d of the country.
The latest bout of violence, which began on Sunday with an American bombing of a key island in the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, has ended a monthlong lull in fighting between the U.S. and Iran.
Trump also wrote in a post<\/a> on Truth Social that he was not interested in negotiating with Iran.
\u201cI couldn\u2019t care less if they sign a worthless, to them, agreement. I like our position now much better, with almost total control of the Hormuz Strait, and their economy totally collapsing. They are just playing out the inevitable. When are the Iranian people going to rise up and fight?,\u201d he wrote.
In response, Iran\u2019s armed forces general staff said in a statement on Telegram Tuesday that it would \u201cimpose a heavy cost on the American enemy.\u201d
The more the \u201cU.S. military insists on its hostile actions in the region, the greater and heavier the losses it will have to bear,\u201d it added.
Despite the recent attacks, Energy Secretary Chris Wright told reporters in Caracas, Venezuela that 17 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, the largest amount since the conflict began.
Wright also said that the average amount of oil passing through the strait is now 8 million barrels a day.
