As House representatives return from the summer recess, one Democrat has already set in motion a plan to nullify Donald Trump\u2019s latest conceited executive order.<\/strong>
The president signed an executive order on Thursday directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario, making it Lake America<\/a>, amid his escalating trade war with Canada.
\u201cWe have a gulf and we have a lake \u2013 now all we need is an ocean. Maybe we\u2019ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and\/or the Pacific,\u201d he told reporters, sitting at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. \u201cMaybe we\u2019ll change them both.\u201d
But House Democrat Debbie Dingell said she plans to introduce a bill later today to nullify the name change, titled the \u201cHands Off Our Great Lakes Act\u201d.
\u201cPeople do not understand how intertwined our two countries are,\u201d Dingell told Politico<\/a>, adding: \u201cAnd this is insane, this naming Lake Ontario \u2018Lake America.\u2019\u201d
Dingell said she had accrued more than 100 signatures from fellow House Democrats in a letter to the president, urging the Trump administration<\/a> \u201cto change its diplomatic approach with our closest ally, Canada, and recognize the importance of the United States-Canada relationship\u201d.
\u201cI grew up in a small town called St Clair, and when I got up and looked out my bedroom window every day, I didn\u2019t see America. I saw Canada<\/a>,\u201d Dingell said. \u201cWe lived that close. Canada was as close to us as [the Cannon House Office Building] is to the Capitol.\u201d
Trump\u2019s order directed federal agencies to adopt the name-change on US maps, documents and databases. Google Maps has changed Lake Ontario\u2019s name to Lake America for US users to reflect the president\u2019s executive renaming order.

Before turning the microphone over to Kevin Warsh, Bessent thanked the European Union and the European Central Bank for their support of US plans to further isolate Iran<\/a> from the global economy. That plan \u2013 dubbed Operation Economic Outcast<\/strong> \u2013 requires the US to win the cooperation of allies and adversaries alike, with a threat of punishment to states and companies that continue to do business with the regime<\/strong>.
Bessent said, without offering specifics, that the plan would lead to the toppling of the Iranian leadership<\/strong>, a goal that the Trump administration<\/a> has been vowing to bring about since the war\u2019s opening days.

Bessent opened his remarks by pointing to the host city of Asheville, North Carolina, as a beacon of economic recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, before promptly pivoting to praise for Trump.
\u201cUnder President Trump, we are entering a new season of national strength,\u201d<\/strong> Bessent told the assembled global leaders.
Bessent criticized the G20<\/a> as having lost its founding priorities<\/strong> in fostering economic growth, and said Trump was bringing the G20 back to that original purpose.

We\u2019re watching today as Scott Bessent<\/strong>, the US treasury secretary, and Kevin Warsh<\/strong>, the chair of the Federal Reserve, deliver their opening remarks at the G20<\/a> meetings in Asheville, North Carolina.
The meetings are unfolding in the shadow of economic disruptions downstream of the war in Iran<\/a>, which has choked global energy markets and driven up inflation around the world. Bessent is speaking first.
The US House is back after a five-week recess. And this week, Republicans are focused a key legislative agenda item: passing a stopgap spending bill to stave off a possible government shutdown<\/strong>.
Currently, funding is guaranteed through 30 September, but after a year marked by record-breaking shutdowns, GOP House speaker Mike Johnson<\/strong> is hoping to advance a bill that would extend funding spending at its current levels until after the November midterms.
Johnson is expected to put a vote on the House floor this week, using a fast-track procedure that requires a two-thirds majority to pass.<\/strong>
Prior to the Senate heading home for their August recess, the upper chamber approved its own continuing resolution to keep the government until 11 December<\/strong>, this also included provisions like preventing political appointees having approvals over federal grants.
Donald Trump has claimed that Iran is a \u201cFailed Nation\u201d and that the regime is \u201cDEAD\u201d in a post on Truth Social today.
This comes as Washington and Tehran exchange their first strikes in a month, after the US struck Larak Island in the strait of Hormuz, and Iran<\/a> retaliated by targeting Jordanian airbases.
Trump, however, insisted that the country\u2019s economic condition had rendered them powerless.
\u201cThey have no currency,\u201d the president said, after the Iranian rial dropped to a record low last week. \u201cThey are not paying their soldiers or police, Inflation is at 300%, and their leadership is in total disarray and incapable of properly representing the country.\u201d
Trump added that \u201cthe only thing\u201d Iran has is \u201cFAKE NEWS from the USA, a willingness to kill their protesters (now over 100,000 people dead. They must be tried for war crimes against humanity!), and a good line of \u201cBULLSHIT\u201d.
It\u2019s worth noting that US prices are up 3.4% compared with a year ago in the US. The average price for gallon of fuel is also a dollar higher than this time last year, before the war with Iran started.

He added: \u201cHe had his due process, ordered removed by a federal judge, and ICE removed him. It\u2019s that simple.\u201d
Yiannopoulos\u2019s removal one day after his arrest, when many others who have been deported had first endured lengthy detention center incarcerations, has prompted questions about whether he received preferential treatment in that respect. Homan said the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, was trying to speed up the deportation process.
The US treasury department is likely to unveil weekly new secondary sanctions aimed at increasing \u2060economic pressure \u2060on Iran<\/a>, \u200bwith an initial focus on banks, treasury secretary Scott Bessent told Reuters.<\/strong>
After imposing \u2060penalties on the United Arab Emirates branches of Egypt\u2019s Banque Misr on Friday over alleged financial links \u2060to Iran, Bessent said in an interview that the next \u200bstep may be cutting off \u200can institution entirely \u200cfrom the dollar-based financial system.
\u201cYou\u2019re going to see a lot \u200cmore of these every week,\u201d Bessent said ahead of a Group of 20 finance leaders meeting. \u201cWe\u2019re starting with the banks, and we\u2019re telling the banks it\u2019s not OK to have Iranian money and to aid the regime.\u201c
Bessent said \u200che intends to drive the message home to G20<\/a> finance ministers and central bank governors to \u200bcut economic ties to Iran, or face secondary sanctions. The Treasury launched the effort, dubbed Operation Economic Outcast, last week.
\u201cThere can be no leakage,\u201d Bessent said. \u201cYou\u2019re either with us or you\u2019re with \u2060the Iranians.\u201c
The Trump administration<\/a> is shuttering \u2060two of the three US Department of Agriculture research projects studying cyclospora<\/a> after the foodborne parasite has \u2060sickened tens of thousands of Americans during the summer, Politico reported<\/a> on Sunday.<\/strong>
The two projects were defunded by Congress<\/a> earlier in the year, while the third is \u2060due to be moved in coming months from Maryland to Iowa as part of a broader USDA reorganization, according to the \u2060report.
Although the third project remains funded, all scientists working on the \u200bparasite have declined to relocate \u200cto Iowa, Politico reported, citing \u200cpeople familiar with the plans and internal documents.
Reuters could not immediately \u200cverify the report.
\u201cNone of the research has been disrupted, and research will continue without disruption,\u201d a USDA spokesperson said, while pointing to Congress over the funding cuts.
Congress did not appropriate funding for the two research projects that were being undertaken at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center \u200coutside Washington DC for the 2026 fiscal year in the Agriculture Appropriations Act, the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. The spokesperson \u200badded that the Agricultural Research Service is working with research leaders to ensure an orderly transition of the programs.

An apparent pending deal between Washington and Ottawa aimed at avoiding damaging tit-for-tat tariffs broke down at the last minute, with Canada\u2019s prime minister, Mark Carney, claiming his country had come \u201cunder attack\u201d from the US.
Among the multiple and complex points of disagreement was a Canadian accusation that US negotiators had pressed for a weakening of legal protections for the French language, which is most heavily spoken in the province of Quebec.
