WASHINGTON \u2014 An immigrant \u200bfrom Guatemala who was taken to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> detention facility<\/a> \u200cin Newark, New Jersey, in July experienced a medical emergency and died after hospitalization, President Donald Trump\u2019s administration said.
Jose Chajon-Raxon was detained by ICE at the Delaney Hall detention facility on July 18 and \u200bexperienced a medical emergency the next day, the Department of Homeland Security, \u200bof which ICE is a part, said in an emailed statement on \u2060Wednesday.
A nurse responded to the medical emergency and \u201cwitnessed Chajon-Raxon experiencing seizure-like activity,\u201d the DHS \u200bsaid, adding medical workers were called and Chajon-Raxon was taken to a hospital.
The DHS \u200bsaid Chajon-Raxon was \u201creleased from ICE custody on July 22\u201d but did not provide more details on that. The DHS statement did not mention when Chajon-Raxon died.
Delaney Hall in Newark has previously come under scrutiny<\/a> \u200bfrom human rights advocates and Democrats following the deaths in ICE detention of a \u200bman from El Salvador named Edwin Lopez-Cornejo<\/a> and another from Haiti named Jean Wilson Brutus. The Salvadoran \u200cman \u2060died this month after a medical emergency while the Haitian man died in December.
ICE was not notified of Chajon-Raxon\u2019s death as it was \u201cnot responsible when an individual passes away weeks after leaving their custody,\u201d the DHS said.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez said he had \u200bbeen given conflicting information \u200bon Chajon-Raxon\u2019s death, \u2060adding that he went to the ICE facility on Aug. 3 in an oversight visit.
More than 50 people have died in ICE \u200bcustody nationwide since President Donald Trump took office in January last \u200byear. Rights groups have \u2060repeatedly raised concerns about medical care and living conditions at the facilities.
ICE says detainees are given appropriate medical care.
The agency has been the face of Trump\u2019s immigration crackdown. The Republican president says \u2060the crackdown \u200baims to improve domestic security.
Rights groups say the \u200bcrackdown has violated free speech and due process rights and created an unsafe environment, particularly for ethnic minorities, \u200bwho have raised concerns about racial profiling.
