Three people are dead in a shooting around an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday, authorities said.
At least five people were injured in the violence, Twin Falls Police Department said.
Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said a suspected shooter has died. It was not clear whether the shooter was being counted among the three dead.
The identity of the suspect and a possible motive were part of the investigation, Hicks said.
\u201cWe believe the threat to the community is over,\u201d he said at a news conference. \u201cThe suspected shooter in this incident is deceased.\u201d
Lynsi Snyder, President of In-N-Out Burger, said a worker was among those killed.
\u201cShe was taking care of our most important asset \u2014 our customers, and her life was taken by a disgusting human who doesn\u2019t value the lives of others or his own,\u201d Snyder said. She added: \u201cHe shot both on our property and off, and ended his life shortly after he took the precious lives of our associate and customers, innocent people who never saw it coming.\u201d
City, county and state authorities responded to reports of an active shooter in the area of an In-N-Out on Blue Lakes Boulevard North around 2:30 p.m., police said.
The area is also the location of multiple major retailers and a movie theater complex. Hicks said hundreds of potential witnesses were expected to be interviewed.
\u201cToday has been a very hard day here in Twin Falls,\u201d he said.
A shelter-in-place order for the area was later lifted and roads were being reopened as the shooting investigation continued, Palmer said.
A nearby Chick-fil-A said it was closing Saturday as a precaution.
\u201cOut of an abundance of caution, Chick-fil-A Twin Falls will be closed for the remainder of today,\u201d the restaurant said.
Magic Valley Mall nearby was closed and people inside were told to stay put, a public safety employee there said earlier Saturday afternoon.
The In-N-Out location, the fourth in Idaho, opened July 24, according to a news release from the California-based chain.
Haley Dodaro was approaching the In-N-Out location to get lunch with her mother on Saturday as just after the shooting happened. She told NBC News that they were circling around the buildings to get into the drive-thru at the time when she saw people running across the road.
Video recorded by Dodaro showed a woman with two children running and apparently urging them to call the police. She and her mother asked what was happening through an open car window and a man in a yellow reflective vest responded \u201cshoot, shoot.\u201d
\u201cSo that\u2019s when we knew there was a shooting,\u201d Dodaro said. \u201cPeople were running out crying and screaming. It was very scary and terrifying.\u201d
