It’s very very painful to miss out. It’ll go away but the scar will stay.”
He then discussed the criticism he faced following Wednesday's semi-final defeat.
“After going out and then experiencing the best result in 60 years … we try not to go to low or too high. The drama about what happened against Argentina was too low. But that’s part of it. The best thing you can do is react on the pitch. Talking doesn’t get you wins. You have to endure, be strong. I’m glad we had that reaction.”
Thomas Tuchel was trying to put a brave face on it on Friday evening when he said that England can get their best World Cup result for 60 years by winning this game. But even he would not have imagined it would be as dramatic as this.
This was a ridiculous game, in which France defended high up the pitch with no pressure on the ball, allowing England to get in time after time. They were relentless and efficient, going 4-0 up at half-time.
Then, in the second half, France were as good as they were poor in the first, playing some remarkable football and creating more than enough chances to win it. In the end, it finished 6-4, although in truth both sides could have got into double figures. It was that sort of game.
Ultimately, it was a positive moment for Tuchel and the players, a chance to end the tournament on a high and with something real to take back to England in the form of their bronze medals. It meant that the sporadic boos for Tuchel before the game were long forgotten.
Despite individual talent often on display, it is not always easy to get excited for the third-place play-off game, with both teams coming off the back of damaging semi-final defeats and with, truthfully, little to play for.
But even the most cynical fan will have been left open-mouthed at the carnage on display in Miami and by the end even hardened tacticians were simply enjoying the fun.
Both teams set up with attacking XIs but, initially at least, England struck a much better balance, capitalising on France’s lack of athleticism and defensive awareness in midfield.
The shambolic nature of the defending was summed up by England's third goal, the 300th goal of the tournament and probably the most comical. Remarkably, England were equally exposed in the second half, as they almost let their four-goal cushion slip.
It made for a glorious contest, where neither side could really contain the other's brilliance going forward.
This was England’s first game at a major tournament (World Cup or European Championship) without Jordan Pickford starting in goal in 10 years, dating back to Euro 2016 when Joe Hart was the No. 1. It ended a streak of 33 consecutive major-tournament starts for Pickford, an England record.
Dean Henderson started today and made some good saves in the first half, before conceding four second-half goals in the eye of the French storm.
At the next major tournament, Euro 2028, Pickford will be 34 and Henderson will be 31. James Trafford, the squad's other goalkeeper at this World Cup, will be 25.
Today's result marks only the second time since the introduction of FIFA's world rankings in 1992 that England have beaten an opponent ranked higher than them at the World Cup, along with a group-stage victory over Argentina in 2002.
In their other nine such match-ups, England had one draw and eight defeats.
On an evening where records tumbled in Miami, it was the sixth game in men's World Cup history with 10 or more goals, and the highest-scoring game since 1982
Deschamps continued discussing today's game, claiming that he didn't want it to define his 14-year tenure.
💬 “We were gutted after the semi-finals but I don’t want to sum up my entire career with these two games. This is not an exact science but we created many emotions and shared them with the French people.”
He was then asked about the next manager, but he didn't mention Zinedine Zidane's name despite him being heavily linked with the job.
“I was always proud of the service I have given to this team. England got the game and France got all the record-breaking, which was their goal.
💬 tcvincent: That was a jolly good time. Now watch the final be the most boring 1-0 Spain victory…
It was a curious World Cup campaign for Bukayo Saka.
Despite saying he was fit after the match, the England winger didn't look close to 100 per cent fitness in any of the matches he played in.
He was left out entirely of the semi-final defeat to Argentina, but responded emphatically today with a hat-trick.
The Arsenal man didn't look particularly happy collecting his Player of the Match award, though.
In case you haven’t heard enough about Kylian Mbappe breaking records, here’s another one: With two goals and an assist today, Mbappe has now recorded the most goal involvements on record (since 1966) at a single World Cup tournament (14 – 10 goals, 4 assists).
In a heartfelt social media post to France head coach Didier Deschamps — who long ago announced that he would be leaving his role after this World Cup — Mbappe expressed his frustration at losing in the semi-final.
Before kick-off, the question then was whether France would give their much-adored manager a proper send-off. Down by four goals at half-time, that send-off looked like it wasn't going to plan.
But the second-half comeback was proof that Deschamps had given his last motivational team talk. And it had landed with his players. The bonus that Mbappe could get the better of Messi led to a spirited effort from France.
The neutral crowd backed the French and it appeared that Deschamps’ tenure could end with a memorable win. But England had other plans.
Didier Deschamps accepted responsibility for France’s “disgraceful” first-half performance but praised his players for fighting their way back into the game at the end of what he described as a “wonderful journey” at the 2026 World Cup.
💬 “We were 4-0 down and played a disgraceful first half,” Deschamps said after the game, according to FIFA. “We had two chances to make it 4-4 and, after that, we pushed forward a little more.
“It’s my fault. Here are the thoughts of a few of our readers:
💬 Anders L.: Most entertaining game of the tournament. Not bad for a ”meaningless” bronze game.
💬 awspc: I think I might have had a slight chance to score in this game. Talk about meaningless stat padding.
💬 Edward S.: I just realised that at no point did VAR absolutely ruin that game. In fact, I forget it even existed.
💬 Adam B.: What an utterly silly yet thoroughly enjoyable game.
Kylian Mbappe has one hand on the Golden Boot after scoring twice and providing an assist against England, but the race is not quite over.
Lionel Messi can still overtake Mbappe, although it would require another statement performance in tomorrow’s final. He needs either a hat-trick to move clear on goals, or two goals and an assist to prevail on the first tiebreaker.
If they finish level for goals and assists, the award will go to the player who has played fewer minutes. Messi will almost certainly have spent longer on the pitch by the end of the final, which would give Mbappe the advantage.
Mbappe won the Golden Boot in 2022, while it is one of the few awards that has eluded Messi, who finished second four years ago.
It might not have ended with him walking out for a World Cup final, but Jude Bellingham’s late goal put the finishing touch to a brilliant tournament.
Seven goals — a record for an England player at a single World Cup — and a host of moments that will live long in the memory.
It now seems remarkable that there were calls for the Real Madrid midfielder to be omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s squad and then from the starting XI for England’s opening game.
Bellingham will surely be included in the Team of the Tournament and has emphatically answered any doubts about his importance to this England side.
With his goal in second-half stoppage time, Jude Bellingham became the first England player to score seven goals in a single major tournament (World Cup or European Championship).
Team Stats
FRA
ENG
Game Details

source

World CupFIFA WorldCup 2026AdvertisementliveUpdated 2h agoKylian Mbappe broke Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record, but France were unable to claim bronze after losing a wild third-place play-off against England.England raced into a remarkable 4-0 half-time lead before Mbappe scored his 21st and 22nd World Cup goals to move ahead of Messi.
