Vern Buchanan, R-Fla. He wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116615022975327653\" target=\"_blank\">May 21 on Truth Social<\/a> that he was \u201cgoing to work very hard to see The Sunshine Protection Act signed into Law.\u201d<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s time that people can stop worrying about the \u2018Clock,\u2019 not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production. Take it!\u201d Trump wrote.<br \/>The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.<br \/>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/29\/all-actions\" target=\"_blank\">Senate version of the Sunshine Protection Act<\/a> stalled last year after Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., objected to fast-tracking the bill\u2019s passage via unanimous consent in October.<br \/>Cotton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cotton.senate.gov\/news\/speeches\/floor-speech-on-opposing-the-sunshine-protection-act\" target=\"_blank\">said the change <\/a>to permanent daylight saving time could lead to overlooked negative consequences, pointing to parts of the country where the sun wouldn\u2019t rise until 9 a.m. or later and citing potentially dangerous, dark morning commutes and workers who would need to work early mornings without sun.<br \/>A senior Hill aide said Tuesday that Cotton has the \u201csame concerns\u201d he\u2019s had about the proposal, and that several senators on both sides of the aisle have opposed the Senate version of the Sunshine Protection Act <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/press\/rep\/release\/commerce-committee-advances-15-bills-nominations-for-fcc-and-nasa-2025-4\/\" target=\"_blank\">in committee<\/a>. The aide said Cotton will ask Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., not to bring up the legislation for a vote.<br \/>Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., said his constituents were eager for daylight saving to become permanent, but was skeptical that the Senate would pass the bill.<br \/>\u201cI\u2019m kind of digging the fact that we\u2019re going to fix it, I hope,\u201d Burchett said. \u201cSee if the Senate takes it up. They probably won\u2019t, but we\u2019ll see.\u201d<br \/>Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., said he favors the bill, and that there are mental health aspects to take into account.<br \/>\u201cI think it\u2019s popular. It shouldn\u2019t be controversial. It should be bipartisan. It saves money,\u201d McCormick said. He cited his  background as an emergency room doctor in adding that \u201cyou get more depression, you get out of joint\u201d<strong> <\/strong>with the time adjustments.<br \/>Changing the clock twice a year is unpopular among Americans, according to a 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/news-highlights\/spotlights\/2025\/how-americans-feel-about-changing-the-clocks-according-to-a-new-ap-norc-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\">AP-NORC poll<\/a>, but opinions about how to change the system are divided. Congress has tried to tackle the issue before, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/senate-passes-bill-making-daylight-saving-time-permanent-rcna20158\" target=\"_blank\">in 2022 the Senate voted <\/a>to make daylight saving time permanent by unanimous consent \u2014 a measure that failed to advance in the House.<br \/>In the 1970s, President Richard Nixon signed into law a bill that would have made daylight saving time the norm for two years to conserve energy during the oil crisis, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/ditch-switch-call-go-permanent-daylight-saving-time-grows-n1043051\" target=\"_blank\">legislation was repealed<\/a> after less than a year of having taken effect, as Americans disapproved of the dark early mornings.<br \/>Almost all states have considered legislation to stop the biannual time changes, and 19 states have enacted bills that would allow year-round daylight saving time if Congress were to do the same, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/transportation\/daylight-saving-time-state-legislation\" target=\"_blank\">National Conference of State Legislatures<\/a>.<br \/>Daylight saving time was temporarily used as a wartime measure during World War I and World War II, but it wasn\u2019t made official nationwide until the Uniform Time Act of 1966.
