The rest of us, they insist, should be grateful for merely being allowed to visit. How small they are. How weak, how unoriginal,\u201d the mayor said.<br \/>\u201cThe irony\u201d of American exceptionalism, he said, was that the country\u2019s history was often written \u201cby those who were told by others with power and influence and wealth that they were anything but exceptional.\u201d<br \/>Mamdani\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/zohran-mamdani-deliver-speech-marking-americas-250th-birthday-rcna352608\" target=\"_blank\"> office told NBC News<\/a> this week that the mayor would deliver a \u201cmajor address\u201d marking the country\u2019s semiquincentennial, another major step onto the national political stage after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-election\/democratic-rift-partys-future-widens-lefts-new-york-victories-rcna351737\" target=\"_blank\">three of his endorsed House candidates<\/a> defeated incumbents and incumbent-endorsed candidates in Democratic primaries last month.<br \/>His speech comes hours before Trump delivers his own address at Mount Rushmore to commemorate the country\u2019s 250th birthday.<br \/>Mamdani was surrounded by some of America\u2019s newest citizens waving U.S. flags, the same week that the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/supreme-court-loss-trump-congress-birthright-citizenship-rcna352418\" target=\"_blank\">upheld birthright citizenship<\/a>, dealing a major blow to Trump\u2019s immigration agenda.<br \/>\u201cThe work of fulfilling the values first enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, that work endures, and it belongs to us all. It belongs, too, to our newest Americans, those standing here with me today, all of whom were recently naturalized,\u201d Mamdani said.<br \/>\u201cNearly a decade ago, I too felt what you feel, the joy of no longer being just a New Yorker, but an American, too,\u201d said Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2018.<br \/>The mayor called \u201cdivision\u201d the \u201coldest\u201d and \u201ccheapest\u201d trick in politics.<br \/>\u201cAt every moment in our past, those who led through exclusion and isolation have tried to win power and enrich themselves by turning us against one another,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cTime and again, including 250 years ago, those forces of division have been vanquished by the forces of progress.\u201d<br \/>He concluded his address with a pitch for the future.<br \/>\u201cThose ideals upon which our nation was built, they are strong enough to endure any authoritarian regime, but only if we reach for them,\u201d he said, moments before ending his address.<br \/>\u201cOurs is a nation working each day towards the perfection in which it was conceived, a nation striving each day to better itself. Therein lies the work of America, the striving, the bettering, the reaching towards perfection,\u201d he added.<br \/>Mamdani called it a \u201cprivilege\u201d to live in a nation that each of its inhabitants can shape.<br \/>\u201cWhat a responsibility each of us possesses to prove ourselves worthy of all those who came before.
