The fourth case was reported in Gillespie County \u2014 near Fredericksburg, Texas.<br \/>A case was originally in Andrews County; however, <a href=https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/news\/agency-announcements\/usda-confirms-first-case-new-world-screwworm-dog-lea-county-new-mexico data-t-l=:b|z|k|\u2691u class=gnt_ar_b_a>USDA later reclassified<\/a> the case to New Mexico \u2014 marking the first case in the state.<br \/>Texas Gov. Greg Abbott further escalated the state&#8217;s response on Friday, June 5, by issuing\u00a0a <a href=https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-deploys-state-resources-to-combat-new-world-screwworm data-t-l=:b|z|k|\u2691u class=gnt_ar_b_a>disaster declaration\u00a0<\/a>for Zavala and Uvalde counties.<br \/>According to the order, the governor has reallocated all available state resources that &#8220;are reasonably necessary to cope with this disaster, and temporarily reassign any such resources that could be allocated to address the spread of NWS to the Texas New World Screwworm Response Team,&#8221; prioritizing the resources to Zavala and Uvalde counties first.<br \/>Abbott also directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate the Texas State Emergency Operations Center at a Level II \u2014 escalated response \u2014\u00a0on Monday, June 8.<br \/>\u201cThe protection of our ranchers, livestock producers, deer breeders, and the Texas economy from this pest is a top priority. We have eradicated this pest before, and we will do it again in close cooperation with our federal partners. The fly&#8217;s larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals.<br \/>USDA reports that the current risk to animals and people in the United States remains\u202fvery low and that NWS is not contagious.<br \/>Rather, screwworm infestations begin when a female fly lays eggs on a wound or body opening.
