Donald Trump<\/a> walked out of an interview with NBC\u2019s Meet the Press after he repeatedly made false claims that the US 2020 presidential elections was rigged in 2020 and questions around compensation<\/a> for those charged in the January 6 insurrection.
The US president\u2019s abrupt exit came during a tense exchange between himself and NBC\u2019s Kristen Welker during a Friday interview in Wisconsin that aired on Sunday<\/a>.
Trump falsely<\/a> claimed<\/a> that the California gubernatorial race was \u201crigged\u201d while asserting untrue claims of cheating in the 2020 US presidential elections.
\u201cIt\u2019s four days and they aren\u2019t even close to counting [ballots],\u201d Trump argued, as Welker argued that is standard for California\u2019s election process<\/a>. Trump also claimed that Republican candidates in the state weren\u2019t performing well. Current polls have forecasted a tight race between Democratic frontrunner Xavier Becerra, who advanced<\/a> to the general November election, and Republican politician Steve Hilton<\/a>.
When Welker asked the president for any evidence on the gubernatorial race being fraudulent, he also accused the veteran reporter of being \u201ccrooked\u201d.
\u201cThey\u2019re crooked, just like you\u2019re crooked, your press is crooked. And Meet the Press is crooked,\u201d said Trump.
Welker then defended herself and tried to ask additional questions, with Trump replying: \u201cYou\u2019re either crooked or you\u2019re stupid. You play right into their hands with this crap. You know that these elections are rigged. Your network knows that they\u2019re rigged.\u201d
Trump then brought up previously repeated false claims that he won the 2020 US presidential election.
When Welker later tried to ask additional questions, Trump continued to assert that NBC<\/a> was \u201ccrooked\u201d and ended the interview. \u201cLet\u2019s call it quits because I\u2019ve had enough,\u201d said Trump, taking off his microphone. \u201cThank you, darling. Have a good time.\u201d
As Welker reminded Trump that she traveled to Wisconsin<\/a> for the interview, Trump replied: \u201cI\u2019ve sat in the rain with you for an hour. On and off in the rain and I\u2019ve given you enough time. You oughta straighten out your press.\u201d
Earlier in the interview, Trump also became irritated as Welker asked if those who pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers during the January 6 riots would be eligible for funding included in Trump\u2019s controversial<\/a> \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund.
Trump claimed \u2013 sans evidence \u2013 that rioters were actually invited into the US Capitol by FBI agents and took plea deals due to fears of longer prison sentences.
\u201cYou know why they pleaded guilty? Because they were told they were going to jail for 15 years \u2026 because they were frightened. They were down. They were ushered into a building,\u201d Trump said, refusing to answer if such individuals should receive taxpayer funding.
