President Donald Trump on Friday said Iranian leaders have not yet reached a deal with the U.S. to end the ongoing war because they\u2019re \u201cstrong\u201d and \u201cproud,\u201d but ultimately, he added, \u201cthey\u2019ve got no choice\u201d except to reach an agreement.

\u201cThey\u2019re strong, they\u2019re proud, there are things they never thought they\u2019d be doing that they\u2019re going to have to do. They\u2019ve got no choice, and it takes a little while,\u201d the president told NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press\u201d moderator Kristen Welker during a sit-down interview in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
Trump\u2019s remarks come as U.S. and Iranian leaders have been negotiating to end the war, which entered its fourth month last week.
The two nations agreed to a ceasefire in April<\/a> that has been extended several times, though tensions flared in recent days when the U.S. and Iran traded strikes<\/a> near the Strait of Hormuz.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday told House lawmakers that the military operation, which the Trump administration has dubbed \u201cOperation Epic Fury,\u201d \u201chas concluded.\u201d
He added that the strikes earlier in the week were \u201cdefensive in nature,\u201d telling members of Congress that they came in response to Iran\u2019s attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz.
\u201cIn order to protect our own forces, we don\u2019t just strike the drones, we strike the people who launch those drones. These are completely defensive in nature, but they are happening in response to an Iranian action. If they don\u2019t shoot at those ships, we don\u2019t shoot, but we have to respond,\u201d Rubio said.
The ongoing conflict led Iran months ago to shutter the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passageway for oil tankers. The strait\u2019s closure has led to soaring oil prices globally and surging gas prices in the U.S.<\/a>, putting pressure on Trump and Republican leaders in Washington to ease economic pressure for Americans.
During Friday\u2019s interview, Trump criticized those who are urging him to quickly reach a deal with Iran to end the conflict, saying, \u201cIt takes years to do these things.\u201d
\u201cThese people have been fighting for 47 years. They\u2019ve been killing Americans,\u201d the president said, referring to Iranian leaders. \u201cThey\u2019ve been taking off their legs and their arms and their faces have been hurt so badly and so horribly.\u201d
He went on to compare the length of this conflict with the Vietnam War, saying, \u201cI\u2019m moving very fast. I\u2019m into three months. You know, Vietnam lasted 19 years. I\u2019m into my third month, and all they do is say, \u2018Whoa, when are you going to win?\u2019 If I were a Democrat, nobody would be talking that way, but it doesn\u2019t matter to me. I\u2019ve gotten so used to it.\u201d
Trump added that so far in the conflict, the U.S. has \u201ctotally destroyed their military,\u201d but added that Iran still does have some missiles and drones.
\u201cMost of the drone factories have been knocked out, most of the launching pads have been knocked out, and most of the missile manufacturing areas have been knocked out. But they still have capacity. They have some missiles, they have some drones,\u201d he said. \u201cI would say percentagewise, maybe 21%-22% of their missiles. It\u2019s a lot of missiles, but it\u2019s not what it was when we first attacked.\u201d
Iran showed that it still retains missile and drone capabilities by launching a series of attacks across the Persian Gulf earlier this week, even hitting the Kuwait International Airport.
The president has long been critical of Iran, and he and other Trump administration officials in recent weeks have said that the war, which began with a series of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, was necessary to prevent the regime from building a nuclear weapon.
On Wednesday<\/a>, in an interview with the New York Post\u2019s \u201cPod Force One\u201d podcast, Trump said it was \u201cunlikely\u201d that the U.S.\u2019s blockade of Iran \u2014 which he imposed after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 would still be in place by Labor Day.
In that interview, the president also floated the possibility of not reaching a deal with Iranian leaders, saying he\u2019ll have to make a \u201cdetermination.\u201d
\u201cDo we sign a deal or we do it the other way?\u201d he asked. \u201cAnd the other way is not nice.\u201d
