Each of those 10 states voted for Trump, the president boasted on Thursday. \u201cWe won them all,\u201d he said.<br \/>The two new coal plants will be in Alaska and West Virginia.<br \/>Trump has long been a champion of reviving the US\u2019s ailing coal industry. Thursday\u2019s White House event featured supportive governors and lawmakers from coal-rich states such as Wyoming and West Virginia.<br \/>In the past year, the Trump administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/29\/trump-spending-coal-industry\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">doled out hundreds of millions of dollars<\/a> to the coal industry, signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/08\/trump-executiver-order-coal-power-plants\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">orders<\/a> forcing ratepayers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/28\/trump-michigan-power-plant\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">pay extra<\/a> for ageing plants to stay open, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/09\/epa-toxic-coal-ash-rollback-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">dismantled<\/a> environmental rules that limit toxins from coal leaching into Americans\u2019 shared air and water.<br \/>The administration\u2019s attempts to provide a cuddly rebranding to coal have even extended to creating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/03\/trump-administration-coalie-mascot-fossil-fuels\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a new mascot with giant eyes<\/a>, called Coalie, and gushing social media posts that include an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ENERGY\/status\/2062180103266697412\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">image<\/a> of a lump of coal wearing sunglasses as if it were on the TV show Love Island.<br \/>\u201cYou\u2019re not allowed to say \u2018coal\u2019 within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Trump administration<\/a> unless it\u2019s preceded by the words \u2018clean, beautiful\u2019,\u201d Trump said on Thursday. \u201cComplicates our life, but it\u2019s good.\u201d<br \/>Regardless of such terminology, coal is not clean. It is the most <a href=\"https:\/\/understand-energy.stanford.edu\/news\/understand-coal\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">carbon-dense<\/a> fossil fuel and therefore a leading cause of the climate crisis when burned. Coal also gives off tiny toxic particles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/dec\/13\/dr-dust-the-man-who-discovered-a-hidden-black-lung-epidemic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">that sicken miners<\/a> and trigger widespread respiratory and heart health problems across the US \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/particulate-pollution-from-coal-associated-with-double-the-risk-of-mortality-than-pm2-5-from-other-sources\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">research has estimated<\/a> that as many as 460,000 deaths in the US from 1999 to 2020 were attributable to air pollution from coal plants alone.<br \/>Environmental groups strongly criticized the administration\u2019s latest aid for coal. \u201cIt is disgusting and reprehensible that the president of the United States is giving away our taxpayer dollars to deadly and expensive coal plants that will make Americans sicker and drive up electricity prices even more,\u201d said Patrick Drupp, climate policy director of the Sierra Club.<br \/>\u201cThis handout betrays everything <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a> promised and only serves his big coal buddies who stroke his ego and hand him shiny trophies.\u201d<br \/>Though Trump on Thursday claimed that his pro-coal actions will lower energy bills and that wind power is \u201cthe most expensive energy\u201d, experts say coal plants are more expensive to build and operate than renewable power sources.<br \/>Trump\u2019s attempts to revive the coal industry, while at the same time seeking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/28\/trump-administration-wind-projects\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">stymie<\/a> the rapid growth of clean energy such as solar and wind, have so far floundered. The number of people working in coal has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/R48587\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">declined<\/a> by more than 90% in the past century, with more people now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wafflehouse.com\/our-story\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">working<\/a> in Waffle Houses across the US than in coal.<br \/>US coal production is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=64924\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">less than half<\/a> of what it was in 2008, with coal recently declining as both a fuel for <a href=\"https:\/\/ember-energy.org\/latest-insights\/us-electricity-2025-special-report\/insight-1-wind-and-solar-overtake-coal-in-historic\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">electricity<\/a> and as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=67644\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">input<\/a> for manufacturing materials such as iron and steel. Cheap, abundant gas has helped displace coal from power grids with even cheaper renewable energy also now taking off in the US despite the administration\u2019s efforts to kill it off.<br \/>\u201cWhat\u2019s next, a taxpayer bailout to build new phone booths?\u201d said Kit Kennedy, a senior climate campaigner at the Natural Resources Defense Council, of the new round of support for coal. \u201cThis is going to mean higher bills and dirtier air.
