The U.S. men’s national team has officially submitted<\/a> its 2026 World Cup<\/a> roster to FIFA \u2014 with injured center back Chris Richards as a part of the squad.
Richards was named to the\u00a0USMNT’s 26-man World Cup roster on Tuesday, May 26<\/a>, less than two weeks after suffering torn ankle ligaments with Crystal Palace.
The 26-year-old has joined his teammates at camp outside Atlanta, where he stayed on Sunday, May 31 as the USMNT defeated Senegal 3-2 in a friendly<\/a> in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Prior to the game against Senegal, USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino admitted he was unsure if Richards would be fit for the World Cup.
\u201cWe need to see,\u201d Pochettino said Saturday. \u201cThe next few days are going to be key, to see the possibility to be ready or not on the World Cup.\u201d
Richards is a vital part of the U.S. back line, with the Crystal Palace man a locked-in starter at a position where the team has very little depth.
The USMNT faces Germany in Chicago on Saturday, June 6 in its final pre-World Cup friendly.
Richards making the USMNT’s final roster is a positive sign, but it still isn’t a sure bet he’ll take part in the tournament.
FIFA’s deadline to submit final rosters is Monday, June 1, with the full list of all 48 teams’ squads set to be revealed on Tuesday, June 2.
If an outfield player goes down with a serious injury or illness, a team can still replace him no later than 24 hours before its first match.
That means Richards could still be removed from the roster until June 11 and replaced with a player from the USMNT’s preliminary squad, as the team kicks off the World Cup on June 12 against Paraguay.
Pochettino could also simply keep Richards on the roster in the hope that his injury will improve, stashing him on the bench until he’s ready.<\/p>\n
