He\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2026\/may\/18\/maine-senate-susan-collins\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">vying to unseat five-term Republican senator<\/a> Susan Collins in a campaign that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/24\/graham-platner-maine-senate-oysterman\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">captured viral progressive attention<\/a>, while also facing controversy related to dredged-up racist, sexist and homophobic online posts \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/22\/graham-platner-nazi-tattoo-maine-senate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a now-covered-up tattoo<\/a> of a Totenkopf, widely recognized as a Nazi symbol.<br \/>After Platner launched his campaign last August before a Labor Day rally with Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, his team reportedly began opposition research on their candidate to uncover any information that could be revealed during his bid for Senate. At that time, his wife, Amy Gertner, shared with the campaign\u2019s then political director, Genevieve McDonald, that she had found sexually explicit messages her husband had sent other women on his phone in the spring of 2025. She and Platner had begun marriage counseling, and the campaign\u2019s aides ultimately decided the messages were a private matter.<br \/>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2026\/05\/30\/read-the-statement-from-graham-platners-wife-about-his-texts-with-other-women\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a statement<\/a> released by Platner\u2019s campaign, Gertner said she was \u201cdeeply hurt\u201d by the news that McDonald had shared details of Platner\u2019s text messages with reporters.<br \/>\u201cI confided deeply personal details about my marriage to someone I considered a friend,\u201d she said. \u201cI trusted this person with the most private chapter of our lives \u2013 the early days of our marriage before any campaign was on our mind.\u201d<br \/>\u201cWe did the hard work that marriage requires. We went to counseling. We were honest with each other in ways that weren\u2019t easy,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd we came through it, not in spite of how much we\u2019ve been through, but because of how much we love each other and the life we\u2019ve built. Our marriage today is stronger than ever before.\u201d<br \/>\u201cI know who Graham is. I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. It is a place for proven leaders with moral clarity and integrity,\u201d McDonald told the New York Times. McDonald was one of three campaign officials who resigned after details of Platner\u2019s tattoo and controversial social media posts were revealed in October.<br \/>According to the Wall Street Journal, Platner has an active account on Kik, a private messaging platform sometimes used for sexting.
