Tulsa could make history this weekend as thousands of classic cars prepare to cruise down Route 66 for the Capital Cruise event Saturday morning.
Organizers say more than 5,000 vehicles are already registered for the parade, which could nearly double the current Guinness World Record for the world\u2019s largest classic car parade. The event has been two years in the making and is expected to draw large crowds to downtown Tulsa and historic 11th Street.
The Capital Cruise route runs about five and a half miles along historic 11th Street from Yale Avenue to Denver Avenue. Cars are scheduled to begin rolling at 8 a.m. Saturday, with organizers expecting the parade to continue through around noon.
Along the route, spectators will find 16 designated \u201ccruise party zones\u201d featuring food vendors, live music, entertainment and restrooms.
\u201cThis will continue to reinforce the fact that if you want a true Route 66 American experience, you have to come through Tulsa,\u201d said Jonathan Huskey, Senior Director of Communications for Tulsa Regional Tourism.
Huskey said organizers hope visitors use the event as an opportunity to explore Tulsa\u2019s local restaurants, attractions and small businesses.
Organizers are warning drivers to plan ahead ahead of significant traffic impacts Saturday morning.
Officials say 11th Street between Yale and Denver will begin closing around 4:30 a.m., with the full parade route expected to shut down by 6 a.m.
Once closures are in place, drivers will not be able to cross 11th Street by vehicle until the parade passes through the area.
Pedestrians will still be allowed to cross on foot before the parade begins.
Spectators can also download the official Capital Cruise app for maps, schedules and additional event information throughout the weekend.
