Racing legend Kyle Busch was coughing up blood and lying on a bathroom floor when somebody called for help from a General Motors training facility in North Carolina, according to the 911 call obtained by NBC News.

\u201cI\u2019ve got an individual that\u2019s, uh, shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he\u2019s going to pass out and is producing a little bit of blood \u2014 coughing up some blood,\u201d the man could be heard saying around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, the day before Busch\u2019s death was announced by NASCAR.
\u201cHe\u2019s awake,\u201d the man said. \u201cHe\u2019s on the bathroom floor right now.\u201d
In the audio, the man can be heard asking for an ambulance to come to the General Motors Charlotte Technical Center in Concord, North Carolina, and telling the dispatcher he would be waiting outside.
\u201cCan you turn the sirens off?\u201d the man asked.
The caller\u2019s name appeared to be redacted from the version of the 911 call released by emergency officials in Concord.
NASCAR CEO Steve O\u2019Donnell confirmed that Busch was using the Chevrolet racing simulator when he got sick, but declined to speculate on the cause and said there\u2019s currently no evidence linking his death to racing or whatever training he was doing.
\u201cWe\u2019re not aware at this time of any correlation between, you know, the race car, the racing, and what took place,\u201d O\u2019Donnell told NBC News.
After Busch was hospitalized, his family said he had a severe illness and was <\/strong>undergoing treatment. But they did not say what kind of illness Busch had and, so far, the official cause of death has not been revealed.
Word of Busch\u2019s death came 11 days after he radioed into his crew near the end of a Cup Series race in Watkins Glen, New York, asking a doctor to give him a \u201cshot\u201d after he finished the race.
Busch, according to the TV broadcast, had been struggling with a sinus cold that was worsened by the intense G-forces and elevation changes at the road course.
Five days later, though, Busch won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race <\/a>in Dover.
\u201cYou take whatever you can get, man,\u201d Busch said on May 15, in what turned out to be his last post-race interview. \u201cYou never know when the last one is going to be, so cherish them all \u2014 trust me.\u201d
Still, about a week after telling the doctor that he needed \u201cthe shot,\u201d Busch discussed his symptoms to reporters in a video <\/a>shared by The Athletic reporter Jeff Gluck.
\u201cI\u2019m still not great,\u201d Busch said. \u201cThe cough was pretty substantial last week.\u201d
The sudden death of Busch sent shock waves through the racing community.
\u201cWe are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch,\u201d NASCAR said on X<\/a>, remembering him as \u201cone of our sport\u2019s greatest and fiercest drivers.\u201d
In a joint statement<\/a> from the Busch family, NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing, the driver was called \u201ca rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation.\u201d
\u201cHe was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans,\u201d it said.
Busch was also a sometimes polarizing figure off the racetrack, earning the nicknames \u201cRowdy\u201d and \u201cWild Thing\u201d for his post-race fights, regular feuds with other drivers, and sometimes outlandish behavior.
O\u2019Donnell said Busch relished playing \u201cthe villain role\u201d and \u201csometimes leaned into it.\u201d
\u201cFans want a personality, they want someone who wins, right, but someone they can relate to, and say, you know, that\u2019s maybe an attitude I had once, or I feel that way as well,\u201d he said.
Retired race car driver Jimmie Johnson told NBC News that behind the wheel Busch was a \u201cfierce competitor.\u201d But off the track he was devoted to his wife Samantha and their two children.
\u201cWhen we\u2019re all competing, you know, there\u2019s a different persona that comes out,\u201d he said.
So Busch\u2019s death, he said, \u201creally just rocked us all in many different layers and levels.\u201d
