By the time the American surgeon who contracted Ebola<\/a> in Congo was flown to Germany for treatment Tuesday, he was barely able to stand on his own, according to two leaders of the Christian missionary group where he worked.

Dr. Scott Myhre, the East and Central Africa area director for the group, called Serge, described the scene as Dr. Peter Stafford departed.
\u201cThere were people in full \u2014 we call it PPE \u2014 the personal protective equipment, and they\u2019re completely covered, and he\u2019s hanging on them barely strong enough to walk,\u201d Myhre said. \u201cHe looked really tired and really sick.\u201d
Stafford worked at Nyankunde Hospital, which is in Congo\u2019s Ituri province, where the Ebola outbreak<\/a> is centered. Days before the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the outbreak<\/a>, Stafford operated on a 33-year-old patient with severe abdominal pain, Myhre said. At the time, doctors thought the patient had a gallbladder infection.
Stafford \u201cdid an abdominal procedure and found that the gallbladder was normal and closed him up, but this patient subsequently died the next day,\u201d Myhre said.
Days later, they realized the patient, who was buried before he could be tested, most likely died of Ebola. Stafford developed symptoms over the weekend and tested positive for Ebola on Sunday<\/a>, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
\u201cHe\u2019s a very meticulous professional, and for every surgical case he does, he would be completely gowned in sterile garb and gloves and hats and glasses,\u201d Myhre said. \u201cBut that\u2019s not quite enough to prevent an Ebola exposure.\u201d
Stafford\u2019s wife, Rebekah Stafford, is also a doctor and treated the same patient. She and the couple\u2019s four young children for now remain in Congo, where they are being monitored, Myhre said. Another physician, Patrick LaRochelle, is thought to have been exposed through a second patient and is being monitored, as well. None has shown signs of illness.
\u201cWe don\u2019t see a lot of pediatric Ebola cases, and we sure hope that\u2019s not the case here,\u201d Myhre said.
Stafford quarantined himself as soon as he developed symptoms, Myhre said, which included chills, fever, muscle aches, fatigue and nausea.
For the flight to Germany, Myhre said, Stafford was placed in a tube-shaped plastic bed, \u201cabout the size of a casket,\u201d to protect the airplane\u2019s crew from getting infected.
Meanwhile in neighboring Czechia, officials said they had been asked by the U.S. to receive and treat another American doctor who had come into contact with an Ebola patient.
Czech Health Minister Adam Vojt\u011bch said on X that the unnamed person was not displaying symptoms and would be transported to his country in a \u201cspecial transport isolation box.\u201d The person was due to arrive later Wednesday at Prague\u2019s Bulovka Hospital, which has \u201cspecialized facilities for highly dangerous infections.\u201d
The incubation period for the virus is up to 21 days, according to the World Health Organization, whose leaders have expressed serious concern over the \u201cscale and speed of the epidemic.\u201d
The virus was likely to have been spreading for weeks before the outbreak was identified. The death toll has risen quickly<\/a>: At least 131 people in central Africa are thought to have died, and 531 are suspected to have been infected.
The type of Ebola fueling the outbreak is a less common form known as Bundibugyo<\/a>, which has no approved vaccine or treatment. During previous Bundibugyo outbreaks<\/a>, the death rate ranged from 30% to 50%, according to the WHO.
