WASHINGTON \u2013 President Donald Trump<\/a> declined Iran’s response to his peace framework to end\u00a0hostilities in\u00a0the war<\/a>, calling it “totally unacceptable” in a May 10 social media post.
“I have just read the response from Iran\u2019s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don\u2019t like it \u2014 TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” Trump wrote on Truth Social<\/a>.
Iran responded early in the morning of May 10 to Trump’s<\/a>\u00a0proposal to\u00a0stop fighting\u00a0and begin peace talks on an array of contentious issues, according to reporting from\u00a0Iran’s IRNA news agency. Iran’s proposal included a demand for compensation for war damages and an emphasis on\u00a0Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, state media said.
No details on Iran\u2018s response were\u00a0immediately\u00a0available,\u00a0and the White House did not\u00a0respond to a request for comment.\u00a0U.S. IRNA\u00a0has\u00a0reported\u00a0that\u00a0Iran sent its reply\u00a0to\u00a0Trump\u2019s proposal to Pakistan, which is mediating.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian appeared to reference the latest proposal in a post on X<\/a> on May 10.
“We will never bow our heads before the enemy, and if talk of dialogue or negotiation arises, it does not mean surrender or retreat,” he said in the post, translated from its original Persian. “Rather, the goal is to uphold the rights of the Iranian nation and to defend national interests with resolute strength.”
The ongoing negotiations come as a fragile, month-old\u00a0ceasefire<\/a>\u00a0between the two countries appears to be holding, even as naval forces\u00a0traded fire\u00a0near the Strait of Hormuz\u00a0in recent days.
Gas prices\u00a0appear to be\u00a0holding steady amid expectations of a peace framework with Iran. Energy Secretary Chris Wright on May 10 didn\u2019t\u00a0rule out\u00a0eliminating\u00a0the gas tax to lower costs for American consumers, though he refused to predict whether prices could exceed $5 per gallon or dip back below $3 per gallon by the end of the year.
The U.S. plan proposes a pause in fighting to hammer out a permanent peace plan, which has so far failed to gain traction among Iranian negotiators. Following attempts to return to the negotiating tables faltered, though Trump has repeatedly extended his self-imposed ceasefire deadlines. The most recent back-and-forth over talks comes after a week of sporadic clashes in the Persian Gulf, amid a month-long ceasefire.
The national average cost of gasoline rose last week to\u00a0$4.55\u00a0a gallon<\/a>, the highest price since 2022\u00a0when it reached $5.01,\u00a0according to AAA.\u00a0Crude oil prices dipped slightly amid negations between Iran and the Trump administration.
After the United States and Iran failed to agree on the peace proposal on May 10, oil prices jumped $3 a barrel. Brent crude, the international benchmark, prices climbed $3.18, or 3.14%, to $104.47, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate was at $98.51 a barrel, up $3.09, or 3.24%.

In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes”<\/a> that aired on May 10, Israeli Prime Minister\u00a0Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>\u00a0said the war\u00a0“is not over” and alleged that Iran still has nuclear material that could be removed if “you go in, and you take it out.”
He later added that military goals had not been entirely completed.
“There are still enrichment sites that have to be dismantled. There are still proxies that Iran supports. There are ballistic missiles that they still want to produce,” he said in the interview. “Now, we’ve degraded a lot of it, but all that is still there, and there’s work to be done.”
Netanyahu also said he hopes to wean Israel off U.S. military support within a decade as his country pushes to strengthen ties with Gulf states.
“I want to draw down to zero the American financial support, the financial component of the military cooperation that we have,” Netanyahu said.
Israel receives about $3.8 billion of U.S. military aid a year, he said. The United States has agreed to provide a\u00a0total of $38 billion\u00a0in military aid to Israel from 2018 to 2028.
Meanwhile, Democrats hammered Trump and his administration over the war. Polling since the war began has consistently shown the conflict is largely unpopular<\/a> with the American public<\/a>, with high gas prices a top concern<\/a>.
Democratic Sen. Cory Booker said in an interview with “Meet the Press” on May 10 that the president has “no way out” of the war and slammed the conflict for its American death toll, cost, and effect on energy prices.
“This is going to go on for months, and that pain is going to continue to be felt by people he promised to lower prices for and keep us out of foreign entanglements,” Booker said.
In a Marist poll released May 6<\/a>, 6 in 10 Americans (60%) disapproved of how Trump is handling\u00a0the war with Iran,\u00a0saying it “has done more harm than good.”
The survey, completed in partnership with NPR and PBS News, showed the disapproval is up six points, from 54% in March, while another 33% approved and 7% were unsure.
A cargo\u00a0vessel\u00a0off\u00a0the coast of Qatar was hit by a drone the morning of May 10, causing a\u00a0small\u00a0fire onboard.\u00a0No injuries were reported, and authorities are investigating\u00a0the source of the projectile, according to the British military.
