Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla, executive secretary of the Hague Group, seemed to think that she was speaking confidentially during a webinar last Thursday, during which she said that the \u201cHague Group and South Africa and Colombia\u2019s co-chairs are advised by a variety of Palestinian organizations,\u201d including Al Haq.
Marco Rubio, U.S. secretary of state, announced<\/u><\/a><\/span> American sanctions against Al Haq and two other organizations on Sept. 4 for being \u201cdirectly engaged in efforts by the International Criminal Court to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute Israeli nationals, without Israel\u2019s consent.\u201d
Formed in early 2025, the Hague Group is a coalition of countries that says it is devoted to \u201ccoordinated legal and diplomatic measures\u201d to defend \u201cinternational law and solidarity with the people of Palestine.\u201d
South Africa, Colombia, Malaysia, Cuba, Namibia and Senegal are part of the group. Honduras and Bolivia exited the Hague Group in March, after both, under new leadership, established warmer ties with Israel.
Gandikota-Nellutla said at the April 30 online event that \u201cthere has been a very careful and actually kind of talked-out dynamic between the states,\u201d of the Hague Group, \u201cand the civil society groups where they have been present at every single ministerial meeting.\u201d
\u201cThey have not been formally in the group, because that\u2019s precisely what would scare away the Europeans\u2014to see this as a radical campaign group, to see this not as a diplomatic bloc that\u2019s led by other states,\u201d she said.
The group executive secretary said that Al Shabaka, a U.S.-based nonprofit, billed as a Palestinian think tank but which has a long history of boycotting Israel and justifying terror, is also advising the Hague Group. (JNS sought comment from the Hague Group, U.S. State Department and the Israeli mission to the United Nations.)
Gandikota-Nellutla\u2019s comments came during the webinar, which United Staff for Gaza hosted. The group used to be called \u201cU.N. Staff for Gaza,\u201d and it consists of current and former United Nations staff members.
\u201cI want to make sure that we\u2019re in a kind of confidential, friendly space here,\u201d Gandikota-Nellutla said during the webinar.\u201d
She added that the South African and Colombian co-chairs of the group \u201cactually have done a fantastic job building this really novel, hybrid model, which doesn\u2019t exist\u201d and \u201cgetting advice while still retaining the diplomatic integrity of the group.\u201d
Andrew Gilmour, chair of United Staff for Gaza and a former senior U.N. official, cut in moments later.
\u201cVarsha, before you say anything else confidential, there are 108 people on this call, so just assume it\u2019s not confidential,\u201d he told Gandikota-Nellutla. \u201cDon\u2019t please tell us anything that you would rather was not made public\u2014not that anyone that I know would dream of making it public.\u201d
Loris Elqura, a veteran of several U.N. agencies who is now a donor relations officer for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, moderated the webinar.
Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, told JNS that \u201cthe mask has slipped\u201d and that the \u201cso-called \u2018Hague Group\u2019 is not a neutral coalition in the Netherlands defending international law but a coordinated political campaign guided behind closed doors by PLO-linked organizations in Ramallah, including Al Haq, a group under U.S. sanctions and tied to the terrorist PFLP.\u201d
\u201cThe Hague Group\u2019s own officials admit these groups are present at every key meeting but deliberately hidden from view to preserve a veneer of legitimacy,\u201d Neuer said. \u201cThis is not a good-faith diplomatic initiative. It\u2019s a carefully constructed front.\u201d
\u201cEspecially alarming is the participation of current and former U.N. staff, who are sworn to uphold neutrality, not to collaborate in secret meetings in order to target a single nation,\u201d he told JNS. \u201cThere is no equivalent network of U.N. insiders organizing against serial human rights abusers like China, Iran or Sudan. They\u2019re only colluding against Israel. This obsession and double standard reflect a deeper rot within the U.N. that has only gotten worse under Ant\u00f3nio Guterres,\u201d U.N. secretary-general.
\u201cThe so-called \u2018Hague Group\u2019 pretends to be a group of nations who care about human rights, but in reality it\u2019s guided by Ramallah and managed by the Corbyn-linked group Progressive International, which is led by Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla, a raging antisemite who says that<\/a><\/span> \u2018Zionism turns everything it touches into evil,\u2019\u201d he added.
