Speaking on Friday, the European Council president, Ant\u00f3nio Costa, said: \u201cWe are designing the handbook [on] how to use this mutual assistance clause.\u201d There had already been a \u201ctest case\u201d in Cyprus, he added, referring to a recent drone strike on a British base on the island at the start of the latest Middle East conflict.
Costa said: \u201cGreece, and then France, Italy, Spain and [the] Netherlands mobilised military equipment and forces \u2026 to help Cyprus to defend from external attacks.\u201d The Royal Navy, meanwhile, was heavily criticised<\/a> for having a limited number of warships available for deployment.
