At least three students were injured in a shooting near the University of Iowa early Sunday morning, according to authorities who say there are no indications they were the intended targets.

The Iowa City Police Department responded to the 100th block of East College Street in downtown Iowa City at approximately 1:46 a.m. after receiving a report of a large fight. Officers who arrived on the scene heard gunfire.
The circumstances surrounding the altercation remain unclear. Video circulating on social media appears to show a confrontation ahead of the shooting that seemed to involve a large group of people. Several individuals could be seen punching and kicking others as bystanders urged them to stop.
It is unclear when gunfire began, but additional video on social media shows a large crowd fleeing the scene. First responders reported at least four people with gunshot wounds, according to scanner traffic recordings provided by Broadcastify. Police confirmed that multiple victims were transported to local hospitals to be treated for injuries sustained in the shooting, but did not specify the total number of people hurt.
A spokesperson for University of Iowa Health Care confirmed that the center received patients from the incident and is evaluating the severity of their injuries. The spokesperson did not provide any updates on the victims’ conditions.
In a statement<\/a>, University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson confirmed that three students were injured. The university issued alerts urging the campus community to avoid the area, while campus safety said “there are no indications any university students were the intended victims.”
\u201cWhile we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cI am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now.\u201d
No arrests have been made. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Iowa City Police Department. The investigation is ongoing.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds offered all the state\u2019s resources for assistance in the investigation.
