Why is there a special election?<\/strong> A House seat was vacated by Democrat\u00a0Mikie Sherrill, now the New Jersey governor, who resigned in November 2025 to run in the gubernatorial election.\u00a0
Who’s running?<\/strong> Joe Hathaway, who is viewed as a\u00a0moderate Republican; Analilia Mejia, a progressive Democrat; and Alan Bond, an independent.
Why the race matters<\/strong>: Mejia is favored to win the heavily-Democratic district, but either way, the winner will bring a new face to the House, where Speaker\u00a0Mike Johnson\u00a0balances a thin GOP majority and intends to pursue a hardline second-term agenda for Trump.
