The drama associated with baseball in October will shift to March when the championship game of the World Baseball Classic takes place March 17.
The United States will look to claim its second WBC title when it takes the field against the winner of the semifinal matchup between Italy and Venezuela, which will be played on March 16. This year marks the sixth time the tournament has been held and the third straight time the U.S. has made it to the championship game.
Here\u2019s what you need to know:
The U.S. squad edged a potent Dominican Republic team<\/a>, 2-1, in its semifinal game on March 15 in Miami. The Americans were powered by solo home runs by Baltimore Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson and Boston Red Sox star Roman Anthony.
Ace Paul Skenes, a Pittsburgh Pirates star, gave up one run in 4.1 innings to get the victory. Closer Mason Miller of the A’s ended the game with a strikeout with a runner on third base to halt the Dominicans\u2019 quest for their second WBC title following their championship in 2013.
The game, which will be played at Miami\u2019s loanDepot Park, will air March 17 on Fox at 8 p.m. ET. The game will also be available to stream<\/a> on FoxSports.com, the Fox Sports app, Fox One and Tubi.
The U.S., featuring a roster of Major League Baseball stars including Skenes, Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Bobby Witt Jr., Cal Raleigh and Kyle Schwarber, were among the favorites in the field before play even began.
The team went 3-1 in pool play, defeating Brazil, Great Britain and Mexico before suffering a surprising loss to Italy that put the Americans\u2019 chances of making the quarterfinals in jeopardy.
Italy fortunately went on to defeat Mexico to win the pool and ensure the U.S. would finish in second place and advance to the next round, where it beat Canada before taking down the Dominican Republic.
The United States won the title in 2017 for its only championship. Japan has won the most championships, with three, including the last time the tournament was played in 2023.
This is the sixth edition of the tournament, which began in 2006.
