Intense air attacks have pounded Tehran and other Iranian cities on the seventh day of the US-Israeli war<\/a> on the country, amid warnings from United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that the bombardment was \u201cabout to surge dramatically\u201d.
Israel\u2019s military said on Friday morning it had begun a new wave of strikes on Tehran, targeting \u201cregime infrastructure\u201d in a \u201cnew phase\u201d of the war, while the US said its B-2 bombers had dropped dozens of \u201cpenetrator\u201d bombs on deeply buried ballistic missile launchers inside the country.
Huge explosions pounded locations in the Iranian capital, including targets linked to the country\u2019s military and political establishment, as well as residential areas and the vicinity of Tehran University, according to news reports and an Al Jazeera team on the ground.
Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera\u2019s Mohamed Vall reported hearing loud explosions in the latest wave of attacks.
Residential buildings in Tehran were hit, Iran\u2019s Noor News reported, and an Iranian military academy was struck while a journalist from Iran\u2019s state broadcaster was reporting live near the site.
Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on X that an elementary school in Tehran\u2019s Niloufar Square had been hit, posting footage of destroyed classrooms. Several schools have been hit in Iran since the US-Israel bombardment began, including on the first day of the war in Minab in the south that killed at least 165 schoolgirls and staff<\/a>.
Of the more than 1,300 people killed in the strikes on Iran so far, at least 181 are children, UNICEF said on Friday.
Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera\u2019s\u00a0Tohid Asadi said the bombardment in the capital had been more intense than previously seen.
\u201cFrom the very early hours of today and into the morning, we have been witnessing a continued wave of massive strikes,\u201d he said, adding the shockwaves of the blast could be felt in the Al Jazeera bureau.
\u201cI can say that compared to previous days, we saw heavier bombardment overnight, at least in the capital,\u201d he said, reporting enormous explosions and fighter jets in the skies, as thick clouds of smoke from the strikes choked the city.
He said the strikes had targeted locations including near Pasteur Street, a highly secured area where key Iranian government institutions are based and where Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader, and several family members, were killed during the early hours of the conflict.
The Office of the President of Iran is also located in the street. Strikes also reportedly hit civilian sites, including residential buildings, car parks and petrol stations, he said.
On Friday, President Masoud Pezeshkian said mediation efforts should be directed at the US and Israel.\u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s be clear: we are committed to lasting peace in the region yet we have no hesitation in defending our nation\u2019s dignity & sovereignty. Mediation should address those who underestimated the Iranian people and ignited this conflict,\u201d Pezeshkian said on X.
Attacks were also reported in Iranian cities including Shiraz, Qom, Isfahan and Kermanshah, in an area home to multiple missile bases, as the Iranian Red Crescent said the death toll from attacks since Saturday had risen to at least 1,332.
Among the victims were 20 people killed and 30 injured in an attack in the Zibashahr area of Shiraz, Jalil Hasani, deputy governor of Iran\u2019s Fars province, told Iranian state media.
Iran\u2019s Tasnim news agency reported that two paramedics had also been killed in the city.
At least six people were injured by an Israeli missile attack on residential areas in Poldokhtar in Iran\u2019s western Lorestan province, Tasnim reported.
Israel\u2019s military said its air force hit six Iranian missile launchers overnight, destroying them before they fired at Israeli territory, and claimed to have destroyed \u201cthree advanced Iranian defence systems\u201d.
In Qom, Israel\u2019s military issued a forced displacement threat for residents in the city\u2019s Shokouhiyeh industrial area, telling them to leave the designated zone within hours or their lives would be at risk.<\/p>\n

The US military said in a post on X on Friday that Iranian targets were \u201cbeing decimated by US forces, paving the way for continued delivery of overwhelming American military firepower\u201d.
Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), said that early on Friday, US B-2 stealth bombers dropped dozens of 2,000lb \u201cpenetrator\u201d bombs on deeply buried ballistic missile launchers inside Iran.
\u201cWe\u2019ve also struck Iran\u2019s equivalent of Space Command, which degrades their ability to threaten Americans,\u201d Cooper said.
Speaking alongside Cooper, Hegseth described an upcoming surge in the bombardment.
\u201cIt\u2019s more fighter squadrons, it\u2019s more capabilities, it\u2019s more defensive capabilities,\u201d Hegseth said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s more bomber pulses, more frequently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s military said on Friday it would expand its attacks in the coming days,\u00a0 prior to an announcement that\u00a0<\/span>they had attacked a \u201cUS-owned\u201d oil tanker off the coast of Kuwait.<\/span>
The vessel was hit and is on fire, state radio reported, citing the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, which assumes operational command of Iran\u2019s armed forces during wartime.
The attack came a day after top Iranian officials said they were ready and waiting<\/a> to confront a US ground invasion, which Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said would be a \u201cbig disaster\u201d for Washington.
US President Donald Trump dismissed the comments, saying it would be a \u201cwaste of time\u201d currently to consider deploying US ground troops.
\u201cIt\u2019s a waste of time. They\u2019ve lost everything. They\u2019ve lost their navy. They\u2019ve lost everything they can lose,\u201d he told US network NBC.<\/p>\n
