{"id":202286,"date":"2026-03-03T22:31:46","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T22:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quixnet.net\/wpinstance\/georgia-father-colin-gray-found-guilty-in-sons-alleged-deadly-school-shooting-nbc-news\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T22:31:46","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T22:31:46","slug":"georgia-father-colin-gray-found-guilty-in-sons-alleged-deadly-school-shooting-nbc-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quixnet.net\/wpinstance\/georgia-father-colin-gray-found-guilty-in-sons-alleged-deadly-school-shooting-nbc-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia father Colin Gray found guilty in son&#039;s alleged deadly school shooting &#8211; NBC News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> news Alerts<br \/>There are no new alerts at this time<br \/>A Georgia jury on Tuesday took the rare action of holding a<strong> <\/strong>father criminally responsible<strong> <\/strong>for the actions of his son who \u2014 while armed with an AR-15-style rifle kept inside their home \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/article\/news\/crime\/trials\/colin-gray-trial-live-stream-jury-deliberations-verdict-watch\/85-243539e9-a500-4782-807b-67e700e99606\" target=\"_blank\">allegedly gunned down <\/a>two schoolmates and two teachers.<br \/>The panel in Barrow County found Colin Gray, 55, guilty of all charges, which included second-degree murder and cruelty to children, in connection with the Sept. 4, 2024, mass shooting,<strong> <\/strong>allegedly carried out by son Colt Gray, at Apalachee High School in Winder.<br \/>The prosecution of a parent for their child committing a school shooting does have at least one precedent.<br \/>James Crumbley and his wife, Jennifer Crumbley, were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/boy-17-becomes-fourth-victim-michigan-high-school-shooting-rcna7267\" target=\"_blank\">2021 deadly shooting at Oxford High School<\/a> in suburban Detroit by their son Ethan Crumbley.<br \/>Colt Gray&#8217;s mother had cited the Crumbley case when she urged that her son&#8217;s access to guns should be cut off before the 2024 mass shooting, according to Barrow County District Attorney Brad Smith.<br \/>&#8220;We hope that (this conviction) moves the needle a little further,&#8221; Smith told reporters. <br \/>&#8220;I think you saw in this case that the mother actually reviewed what happened in Michigan &#8230; and she then, as a result of that, asked her husband to remove the weapons,&#8221; Smith said. <br \/>&#8220;It could have ended this tragedy. So Michigan was able to move the needle to the point that almost stopped this tragedy,&#8221; he said. &#8220;How many tragedies it did stop? We hope we move the needle a little further.&#8221; <br \/>The jury deliberated for less than two hours before finding Gray guilty on all 27 charges.<br \/>He didn&#8217;t appear to show outward emotions as the jury delivered its convictions. <br \/>After the jury was polled to confirm all the guilty verdicts, Gray, wearing a blue sport coat and khaki pants, was handcuffed and taken away by court security.<br \/>Judge Nicholas Primm didn&#8217;t immediately set a date for sentencing, saying that &#8220;there are a lot of people that need to be notified and have a right to appear.&#8221; Gray is facing up to 243 years behind bars.<br \/>Defense<strong> <\/strong>attorneys declined to answer reporters\u2019 questions as they left the courthouse.<br \/>Colt Gray is accused of using the firearm his father should have secured to carry out the slaughter about 45 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.<br \/>The younger Gray, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, remains in custody and a trial date has not yet been set.<br \/>Prosecutors accused Colin Gray of ignoring warning signs of his son&#8217;s potential violence and allowing him access to the high-capacity weapon used at Apalachee High School.<br \/>Jurors were shown pictures of Colt&#8217;s bedroom, which included pictures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2390683404766676\" target=\"_blank\">of school shooter Nikolas Cruz <\/a>on the wall. Cruz killed 14 students and three staff members at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/now\/video\/victims-families-mark-five-years-since-marjory-stoneman-douglas-high-school-shooting-163321925797\" target=\"_blank\">Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14, 2018<\/a>.<br \/>The four slain in Georgia were Mason Schermerhorn, 14; Christian Angulo, 14; Richard Aspinwall, 39; and Cristina Irimie, 53.<br \/>Colin Gray, testifying on his own behalf, recounted incidents of his son feeling bullied at school and occasionally showing signs of rage.<br \/>Still, the dad told jurors he never considered Colt Gray to be a violent threat.<br \/>\u201cI never thought that he would even have a thought process of bringing a gun to school or doing any kind of harm to anybody else.
