The Cuban government said they were armed and initiated the firefight.<br \/>Cuba vowed to defend itself against \u201cterrorist and mercenary aggression\u201d as more information emerged about the U.S.-based Cuban men, whom the government accused of \u201cfoiled armed infiltration.\u201d <br \/>Other passengers on the boat may be U.S. legal permanent residents, the U.S. officials said, but that has not been confirmed. A third person on the boat was in the U.S. on a K-1 visa, which allows foreigners to enter the U.S. to marry U.S. citizens.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/02\/26\/us-americans-cuba-boat-shooting-rubio\" target=\"_blank\">Axios first reported<\/a> the new details of the men\u2019s legal status.<br \/>President <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DiazCanelB\/status\/2027012778838348146?s=20\">Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel<\/a> said Thursday that \u201cCuba will defend itself with determination and firmness against any terrorist and mercenary aggression that seeks to affect its sovereignty and national stability.\u201d<br \/>U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday the U.S. will carry out an independent investigation before it responds, adding that it is going to independently verify the information shared by the Cuban government &#8220;and reach our own conclusions.\u201d<br \/>As part of that effort, Rubio requested official access to the injured men captured by Cuba, the U.S. officials told NBC News. Some of those on the boat had criminal records, the officials added.<br \/>Family members, friends and associates who spoke with NBC News and Telemundo, NBC\u2019s Spanish-language network, said the men were known to be opposed to the Cuban government.<br \/>A congressional aide told NBC News that there is no indication of any U.S. government link to any of the people on board. I don&#8217;t justify the method or the action,&#8221; he said in Spanish in an interview in Casa Cuba de Tampa, an organization for Cuban exiles. \u201cFor those who, in one way or another, have had to give their lives, both at home and abroad, for this freedom that we all long for and that has cost us the loss of family and the suffering of separation.\u201d<br \/>Ibrahim Bosch, president of Partido Republicano de Cuba, an organization that opposes the Cuban regime, said Michel was a member of their group. But in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=1504712564990764&#038;set=a.347225990739433\" target=\"_blank\">a statement<\/a> on social media Thursday morning, he said &#8220;the organization\u2019s leadership was completely unaware of his intentions, plans, or participation in said event.&#8221;<br \/>Cruz Correa was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/boat-reportedly-involved-deadly-shooting-cuba-coast-stolen-florida-keys-mcso\/3773451\/\" target=\"_blank\"> named as a suspect in the theft <\/a>of the Florida-registered boat the men are believed to have used.<br \/>According to an incident report from the Monroe County Sheriff\u2019s Office in Florida obtained by NBC News, the boat was reported stolen Wednesday, and its owner said he believed Cruz Correa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/boat-reportedly-involved-deadly-shooting-cuba-coast-stolen-florida-keys-mcso\/3773451\/\" target=\"_blank\">had stolen it<\/a>. <br \/>The Cuban government also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2026-02-25\/identifican-a-participantes-de-infiltracion-armada-con-fines-terroristas-frustrada-en-villa-clara-25-02-2026-20-02-54\" target=\"_blank\">identified six of the men <\/a>it says were in the boat and are now detained in Cuba. <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cubaminrex.cu\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-07\/GAceta%209%20de%20julio%20goc-2025-ex34_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The Cuban government previously designated t<\/a>wo of them, Amijail S\u00e1nchez Gonz\u00e1lez and Leordan Cruz G\u00f3mez, as people wanted for &#8220;their involvement in the promotion, planning, organization, financing, support or commission of actions carried out in the national territory or in other countries, in connection with acts of terrorism,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2026-02-25\/identifican-a-participantes-de-infiltracion-armada-con-fines-terroristas-frustrada-en-villa-clara-25-02-2026-20-02-54\" target=\"_blank\">a Cuban state media report<\/a>, citing a statement from the Interior Ministry.<br \/>NBC News was not immediately able to independently verify that information.<br \/>A Cuban man in Miami said his name also appears on the list from the Cuban government as one of the men who was captured. <br \/>\u201cThey say they have me detained, and I\u2019m here in the United States,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telemundo51.com\/noticias\/local\/exclusiva-hombre-que-dice-estar-en-la-lista-de-detenidos-de-cuba-esta-en-miami\/2755088\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roberto Azcorra Consuegra told Telemundo\u2019s Miami station<\/a>.<br \/>Azcorra Consuegra said in Spanish that he knows those who were involved in the incident because they all belong to different organizations opposed to the Cuban government.<br \/>&#8220;We are all young people who want freedom for our country,&#8221; he said, adding that he did not have any plans to go to Cuba.  <br \/>Asked why Cuba\u2019s government would include his name on the list, Azcorra Consuegra said: \u201cThey know me. They know me well. They know everything.\u201d<br \/>In <a href=\"https:\/\/cubaminrex.cu\/es\/declaraciones-del-viceministro-de-relaciones-exteriores-de-la-republica-de-cuba-carlos-fernandez-de\" target=\"_blank\">a statement Thursday evening<\/a>, Cuba&#8217;s Foreign Affairs Ministry acknowledged the &#8220;error in identification,&#8221; adding that Azcorra Consuegra was not part of the group involved in Wednesday&#8217;s incident, &#8220;although he is a person known for his history linked to violent actions and intentions against Cuba.&#8221;<br \/>The wife and daughter of Conrado Galindo Sariol, one of the six men who were captured, told Telemundo&#8217;s Miami station they were surprised to hear he was involved in the incident.<br \/>&#8220;We knew nothing; it caught us and everyone else off-guard,&#8221; Mar\u00eda de Jes\u00fas Galindo, Galindo Sariol&#8217;s daughter, said in Spanish. <br \/>She said her father was tortured for his activism in Cuba and imprisoned for seven years. She now worries that he will be tortured again, or even killed, now that he is in government custody.<br \/>Galindo Sariol\u2019s wife, Ana Segu\u00ed, said her husband &#8220;is not a terrorist, nor has he ever had a weapon.&#8221;<br \/>&#8220;He was against the Cuban government, that&#8217;s true. But he&#8217;s not a terrorist,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He&#8217;s a hero to me because all he dreams of is the freedom of Cuba.&#8221;<br \/>Miami-based activist Jorge Luis Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez, known as Ant\u00fanez, who was jailed for 17 years, told NBC News that he shared a prison with Galindo Sariol in the province of Camag\u00fcey. They participated in a hunger strike in 2005.<br \/>According to Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez, Galindo Sariol was jailed because of his activism and opposition to the government. He is also a very decent man. I never heard him say a bad word. Very well-mannered,\u201d Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez told NBC News.
