Flights were canceled\u00a0at both airports\u00a0and tourists were\u00a0advised to stay\u00a0put after violence erupted Feb. 22,\u00a0following\u00a0a Mexican military\u00a0operation\u00a0that\u00a0led to the death of\u00a0Nemesio Rube\u0301n\u00a0Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of\u00a0the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, who was known as\u00a0“El Mencho.<\/a>“
At one point, large swaths of the country<\/a> were under shelter-in-place directives, including popular destinations like Cancun, Cozumel and Tijuana.
Many Americans had reached out to the State Department and lawmakers for help in leaving\u00a0Mexico.\u00a0
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has said things have calmed down, but security experts have told USA TODAY that it’s too soon to tell if that calm will last<\/a>.
Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, a professor in the\u00a0Schar School of Policy and Government<\/a>\u00a0and co-director of the\u00a0Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC<\/a>) at George Mason University, said there may be a fight for new leadership of the cartel. “And because they are in continuous confrontation with other groups \u2026 that kind of generates violence.”
Mexico overall remains at a level 2 travel advisory<\/a>, according to the State Department, which encourages Americans to exercise increased caution.
Travelers trying to leave Mexico are advised to check flight status with their airline. \u201cIf your\u00a0direct\u00a0flight to the United States is cancelled, you\u00a0might consider\u00a0booking\u00a0a connecting flight through another Mexican\u00a0or U.S.\u00a0City,\u201d according to the alert, which noted that public transportation and businesses are also resuming normal operations.<\/p>\n
