The envoys dispatched to Europe by President Donald Trump, however, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/europe\/belgium-summons-us-ambassador-antisemitism-accusation-circumcisions-rcna259315\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly finding themselves at the heart of controversies<\/a> themselves.<br \/>France demanded an explanation Tuesday from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/trump-picks-jared-kushners-father-charles-kushner-ambassador-france-rcna182298\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Kushner, the American ambassador in Paris<\/a>, for why he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/europe\/france-ambassador-charles-kushner-us-far-right-activist-death-rcna260222\" target=\"_blank\">failed to show up when summoned<\/a> to explain comments made last week by the Trump administration that France objected to. <br \/>The State Department <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StateDeptCT\/status\/2024571681121919440\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> it was concerned that \u201cviolent radical leftism is on the rise\u201d after the killing of a French far-right activist.<br \/>In response, France temporarily barred Kushner, the father of Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner, from meeting with any French officials.<br \/>\u201cWhen these explanations have taken place, then the U.S. ambassador in France will naturally regain access to members of the French government,\u201d Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot told the broadcaster France Info early Tuesday. <br \/>Until then, Kushner&#8217;s ban \u201cwill naturally affect his capacity to exercise his mission in our country,\u201d Barrot said.<br \/>An explanation came later on Tuesday when Kushner called Barrot, who told the American envoy that France would not accept \u201cany form of interference or manipulation of its national public debate,\u201d according to a Foreign Ministry official. <br \/>\u201cThe ambassador took note, expressed his desire not to interfere in our public debate,\u201d the official added. <br \/>France-U.S. tensions flared when Quentin Deranque, 23, a far-right activist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/europe\/french-police-arrest-hard-left-members-killing-far-right-activist-rcna259508\" target=\"_blank\">died from brain injuries<\/a> last month after he was beaten during left-right violence on the margins of a student meeting in the city of Lyon. <br \/>Seven people have been handed preliminary charges in connection with the death, including an aide to a lawmaker for the leftist France Unbowed (LFI) party, which has condemned the killing.<br \/>Last week, the State Department\u2019s Counterterrorism Bureau <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StateDeptCT\/status\/2024571681121919440\" target=\"_blank\">posted to X<\/a> that Deranque&#8217;s killing<strong> <\/strong>\u201cby left-wing militants, should concern us all.\u201d<br \/>\u201cViolent radical leftism is on the rise and its role in Quentin Deranque\u2019s death demonstrates the threat it poses to public safety. We will continue to monitor the situation and expect to see the perpetrators of violence brought to justice,\u201d it added.<br \/>The U.S. Embassy in Paris reposted that statement on X.<br \/>A French diplomatic official told NBC News on Sunday that Kushner had been summoned to the French Foreign Ministry, the Quai d\u2019Orsay.<br \/>\u201cHe did not show up,\u201d according to a statement from a senior official at the ministry Monday.<br \/>The comments on Deranque concerned a \u201ctragedy that occurred in France and concerns only our national public debate \u2014 which we refuse to allow to be exploited,\u201d the official said. <br \/>\u201cFaced with this apparent misunderstanding of the basic expectations of an ambassador who has the honor of representing his country, the minister requested that he no longer be allowed direct access to members of the French government.\u201d<br \/>Kushner can still \u201csmooth over the irritants that inevitably arise in a 250-year-old friendships\u201d if he shows up to the ministry, the official added.<br \/>On Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry caveated that \u201cnot showing up is his personal responsibility\u201d and that it \u201cdoes not affect the relationship between France and the United States in any way.\u201d<br \/>The American Embassy in Paris did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.<br \/>Such clashes between U.S. diplomats and their hosts \u2014 often ostensibly allies \u2014 have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/economy\/europe-halts-trade-deal-trump-tariffs-rcna260231\" target=\"_blank\">become increasingly commonplace<\/a>. <br \/>Trump officials have openly berated their European partners on everything from defense spending and immigration to \u201cfreedom of speech\u201d and the allegation that their governments are too liberal and \u201cwoke.\u201d<br \/>John Koenig, who served as American ambassador to Cyprus under President Barack Obama, was critical of this approach.  <br \/>\u201cTrump\u2019s ambassadors in Europe, in particular, are emulating their boss\u2019s intensely personalized, norm-busting, and provocative behavior,\u201d Koenig, who also held posts in Belgium, Italy and Indonesia, told NBC News.<br \/>This tone was set \u201cduring Trump\u2019s first administration,\u201d he said. \u201cHostility, meddling in internal matters, courting the extreme right. Like everything else, it is much, much worse this time around.\u201d<br \/>Kushner himself was summoned last August after he accused President Emmanuel Macron of failing to combat antisemitism. Macron called this an \u201cunacceptable statement for somebody who is supposed to be a diplomat.\u201d<br \/>In neighboring Belgium, U.S. Ambassador Bill White <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/europe\/belgium-summons-us-ambassador-antisemitism-accusation-circumcisions-rcna259315\" target=\"_blank\">was summoned last week<\/a> after accusing his hosts of the \u201cunacceptable harassment of the Jewish community.\u201d That was following an investigation of three men on suspicion of performing circumcisions without certified medical training.<br \/>Belgian officials strongly denied this, saying circumcisions are permitted under strict health and safety standards. \u201cPersonal attacks against a Belgian minister and interference in judicial matters violate basic diplomatic norms,\u201d Foreign Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/prevotmaxime\/status\/2023464805869445377?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">Maxime Pr\u00e9vot wrote in a post on X.<\/a><br \/>Meanwhile, Tom Rose, Washington\u2019s diplomat in Poland, said the U.S. would cut ties with a parliamentary speaker who said that Trump did not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded: \u201cAllies should respect, not lecture, each other.\u201d<br \/>Last month, Trump\u2019s nominee for Iceland ambassador, Billy Long, apologized after his \u201cjoke\u201d that Iceland could become the 51st state.
