Vitaliy Klitschko is still answering questions from the foreign affairs committee.
He is asked what more the UK or other allies can do to help bring Ukrainian kids, taken during Russia’s full-scale invasion, back home.
“We have to do everything (that) we can, first of all to support Ukraine… (put) pressure on Russia, pressure Putin,” Kyiv’s mayor says.
“We are talking about the young generation, without children, without our citizens… what (do) we have?”
In June last year, the Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale University estimated that more than 35,000 had been taken to over 100 locations in Russia and occupied territories.
The mayor of Kyiv says it has been an emotional time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Vitaliy Klitschko details the first period, saying the “city was empty” and it has been difficult ever since. 
Despite enjoying the job and its challenges, he adds that “seeing young kids… without arms, legs, sometimes without eyes” was difficult psychologically.
Klitschko says he was brought to tears during one of his recent monthly visits to give away medals to parents who have lost children.
“Mr Mayor, you don’t remember me. I am second time… last year you give already medal for my young son, this medal is for my oldest one,” he recounts a story told to him by a mother. 
“I don’t have children anymore.” 
Vitaliy Klitschko says roughly 600,000 Ukrainian refugees have moved to Kyiv from the east and south of Ukraine.
He adds that the refugees arrived due to the “safety” of Kyiv being the main priority.
“Kyiv (is) protected from air defence better than the other city,” the mayor says.
“Second point, we provide the best services, medical care, education, (and a) whole spectrum of services (which) is very important.” 
Vitaliy Klitschko has been asked about his relationship with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and briefly paused before giving his answer.
Klitschko was asked whether he had spoken to Zelenskyy recently, after suggesting in January the pair hadn’t met in person for several years. 
He says Kyiv is doing everything to “support” the army and the country.
The city’s mayor says he understands the position of president during a war “is not easy” and that he is busy.
Despite being criticised by Zelenskyy previously, he says it is important for there to be “unity inside the country,” which ultimately makes Ukraine “stronger”. 
The mayor of Kyiv is answering a question from Emily Thornberry, the chair of the UK’s foreign affairs committee of MPs.
Thornberry asks whether there is any justification for Russia’s bombardment of Kyiv.
Vitaliy Klitschko says Moscow aims to “put the city in the blackout”.
“[There is] no water, no electricity, no heating,” he says.
“We are fighting to survive.” 
Klitschko says it is “very important” to be strong in the face of Russian attacks, adding that “we show our resistance”.
Vitaliy Klitschko is continuing to speak to the British parliament’s foreign affairs committee, where he has accused Russia of genocide against Ukrainians. 
There are “no rules” in Russia’s war, he says.
“This fight is genocide.” 
The mayor adds that the east of Ukraine is “totally destroyed” and that the main goal of Vladimir Putin is to take “Kyiv and the whole of Ukraine”.
Kyiv’s mayor Vitaliy Klitschko tells the foreign affairs committee that while the “frontline is actually far from us”, citizens in Ukraine’s capital listen to air raid alarms “every day”. 
“Every day Russians send Kamikaze drones,” the mayor of Kyiv adds.
He says Ukraine has “successfully” defended its homeland for almost four years.

Vance said of the UK: “Perhaps most concerningly, I look to our very dear friends, the United Kingdom, where the backslide away from conscience rights has placed the basic liberties of religious Britons, in particular, in the crosshairs.”
Vance also said: “In Britain, and across Europe, free speech, I fear, is in retreat.” 
This year, Marco Rubio, US secretary of state, will be the main player for the Trump administration in Munich (again see our previous post for more).
America’s European allies will be hoping he takes a softer approach, and signals more support for Ukraine’s defence.
Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, will lead a large delegation to the Munich Security Conference on Friday.
Wolfgang Ischinger, the former diplomat who chairs the annual gathering of security experts and policymakers, said more than 50 US Congress members were expected to attend this year. 
Fifteen prime ministers or heads of state from the EU will be in attendance, with the German Chancellor Freidrich Merz, to open the event. 
Volodymyr Zelenskyy will lead the Ukrainian delegation shortly before the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
Ischinger told reporters today that transatlantic relations are “in a considerable crisis of trust and credibility,” and it was “gratifying that the American side is showing” strong interest this year.
JD Vance, Donald Trump’s vice president, used his speech at last year’s Munich conference to take aim at Europe, in one of the first major signals of Trump’s second term in office that the US would pivot away from guaranteeing European security.
Ischinger was asked if Rubio would give a similar speech to Vance’s at 2026’s event. 
The chair responded, saying Rubio wouldn’t speak about issues “that do not directly fall within his portfolio”.
