United States President Donald Trump says he has cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials and has told protesters to \u201ctake over your institutions\u201d amid Tehran\u2019s crackdown.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Trump said that \u201chelp is on the way\u201d without offering further details. Trump has openly contemplated ordering military attacks on Iran over the last several days.

Trump has threatened Iran with military strikes in the past as a means of pressuring Tehran into greater alignment with US demands, and has said during the last week that a harsh response by Iranian authorities to the country\u2019s protesters could result in US attacks.
The US president announced<\/a> on Monday that any country doing business with Iran would be subject to a 25 percent tariff. On Tuesday, the State Department issued an alert saying US citizens should \u201cleave Iran now\u201d amid the rising tensions.<\/p>\n

Asked by reporters on Tuesday what he meant when he said \u201chelp is on the way\u201d, Trump declined to share specifics.
\u201cYou\u2019re going to have to figure that one out. I\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said.
In a subsequent interview with CBS News, Trump again said that if Iran\u2019s government executed protesters the US would take \u201cvery strong actions\u201d. He added he has not yet received \u201caccurate numbers\u201d on how many people have been killed.
Analysts have warned that US strikes, which would likely violate international law, could have unforeseen consequences in Iran, currently facing the largest protest movement in years.
\u201cThe Iranian people are caught between a repressive regime and foreign aggression,\u201d\u00a0Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group, told Al Jazeera in a TV interview.
\u201cIf the president decides to do political decapitation in Iran, what comes after? There\u2019s no organised, viable opposition inside Iran that can take over immediately. So the more likely scenario is that more repressive elements within the Revolutionary Guard will take over,\u201d he said.
\u201cIf he [Trump] creates a total vacuum at the top of the Iranian system, then the country might descend into violent chaos and civil strife in the way that we saw in Libya, or in Syria, or in Yemen, or in Iraq,\u201d Vaez added.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has said that more than 2,400 people have been killed, while state media has said that more than 100 security personnel<\/a> have been killed.
Al Jazeera cannot independently verify the figures. An internet blackout in Iran has restricted the flow of information for five days.
Iranian officials, meanwhile, have repeatedly accused the US of fomenting unrest.
Most recently, Iran\u2019s top military commander, Abdolrahim Mousavi, said US and Israel had deployed members of the armed group ISIL (ISIS) inside the country to carry out attacks, without providing evidence.<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had previously claimed during an exclusive interview<\/a> with Al Jazeera that Iranian authorities had recordings of voices from abroad giving orders to \u201cterrorist agents\u201d to fire on police and protesters.
In a post on X on Tuesday, the chief of Iran\u2019s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani\u00a0 said that Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were the \u201cmain killers of the people of Iran\u201d.
For their part, France and Qatar, a major non-NATO ally of the US, have been among the countries seeking to calm the rising tensions.
On Tuesday, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani spoke by phone to Secretary of Iran\u2019s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani.
Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Qatar\u2019s support for all efforts aimed at de-escalation and peaceful solutions, the ministry said in a statement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, meanwhile, spoke to his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot on Tuesday, according to Iran\u2019s Tasnim news.<\/p>\n
