Human rights and international monitoring groups have tracked the protests across the nation&#8217;s major cities and in dozens of towns across all of its provinces. It is the largest uprising challenging the Islamic Republic&#8217;s clerical rule since 2022.<br \/>Norway-based organization\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/www.iranhr.net\/en\/articles\/8526\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=:b|z|k|\u2691u class=gnt_ar_b_a>Iran Human Rights<\/a>\u00a0said on Jan. 11 it has confirmed at least 192 protesters have been killed since the start of the demonstrations. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activist News Agency says it has verified the <a href=\/story\/news\/world\/2026\/01\/12\/iran-protests-government-rights-groups\/88139313007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=:b|e|k|\u2691u class=gnt_ar_b_a>deaths of over 500 protesters<\/a> so far across protests in hundreds of locations. The group said more than 10,600 people have also been transferred to prisons following arrest.<br \/>Iran has not provided any official figures. A government-imposed\u00a0<a href=\/story\/news\/world\/2026\/01\/09\/iran-protests-crackdown-trump-threat\/88097142007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=:b|e|k|\u2691u class=gnt_ar_b_a>internet blackout<\/a>\u00a0has cut off much communication with those inside the country since Jan. 8, impeding the flow of information.<br \/>Demonstrations in support of the protesters have also cropped up in several international cities in recent days, including in Los Angeles, where a <a href=\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/01\/11\/uhaul-los-angeles-rally-iran-protests-demonstration-authorities\/88135186007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=:b|e|k|\u2691u class=gnt_ar_b_a>driver plowed a U-Haul truck<\/a> into a large crowd on Jan. 11.<br \/>Araqchi claimed the protests were &#8220;under total control&#8221; and said Trump&#8217;s comments warning the U.S. could step in has motivated what he called terrorists to target protesters and security forces in order to invite foreign intervention.<br \/>Trump has repeatedly warned Iran&#8217;s leaders against killing protesters and has in recent weeks ramped up his threats. On Jan. 11, the president told reporters aboard Air Force One that he is <a href=\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/01\/11\/donald-trump-military-options-iran-violence-protests-deaths\/88136253007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=:b|e|k|\u2691u class=gnt_ar_b_a>considering military action<\/a>.<br \/>&#8220;The military is looking at it, and we&#8217;re looking at some very strong options.
