of faithful gathered in St Peter\u2019s Square on Sunday to celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.<br \/>Observed on the Sunday following Epiphany, the feast marks the conclusion of the Christmas season and ushers the Church into Ordinary Time and the beginning of a new liturgical year.<br \/>This is a time, the Pope said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/angelus\/2026\/documents\/20260111-angelus.html\" rel=\"external\"><b><u>in his address<\/u><\/b><\/a> from the window of the Apostolic Palace, that \u201cinvites us to follow the Lord together, to listen to his word and to imitate his gestures of love toward our neighbour.\u201d<br \/>Jesus\u2019 baptism in the waters of the Jordan, the Pope continued, is an invitation to each of us to renew the promises of the sacrament, \u201cwhich makes us Christians, frees us from sin and transforms us into children of God through the power of his life-giving Spirit.\u201d<br \/>Commenting on the Gospel of Matthew, Pope Leo explained that, in this event, \u201cthe whole Godhead is made present in history: just as the Son descends into the presided over the baptism of 20 children of Vatican employees in the Sistine Chapel.       <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/article><\/div>\n<\/aside><\/div>\n<p>\u201cGod does not look at the world from afar, without touching our lives, our wounds and our hopes,\u201d the Bishop of Rome continued. \u201cHe comes among us with the wisdom of his Word made flesh, drawing us into a surprising plan of love for all humanity.\u201d<br \/>To the great astonishment of John the Baptist, the Lord himself chooses to be baptized \u201clike all sinners, in order to reveal the infinite mercy of God.\u201d<br \/>The sacrament of baptism, Pope Leo said, introduces each of us into the life of the Church, \u201cthe People of God, made up of men and women of every nation and culture, reborn by his Spirit.\u201d<br \/>The Pope encouraged the faithful to remember \u201cthis great gift we have received,\u201d committing themselves \u201cto bear witness to it with joy and authenticity.\u201d He also recalled the service earlier that morning in the Sistine Chapel, during which he baptized twenty newborns, now \u201cour new brothers and sisters in the faith.\u201d<br \/>\u201cThis first of the sacraments is a sacred sign that accompanies us forever.
