A Florida man fatally shot his wife, critically wounded his stepdaughter and then killed himself<\/a> after the parents argued over changing the channel from \u201cMonday Night Football,\u201d authorities said.
Jason Kenney, 47, had been watching his favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, beat the Indianapolis Colts<\/a> when his 38-year-old wife, Crystal Kenney, \u201ctold him that she did not want to watch football\u201d anymore, according to a statement from the Polk County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/a>
Jason Kenney had \u201cbeen drinking during the evening\u201d in Lakeland, and at about 11 p.m., with the game well in hand for San Francisco<\/a>, \u201can argument began when Crystal Kenney suggested they watch something else on television and the argument got really heated,\u201d Sheriff Grady Judd told reporters<\/a>.
Crystal Kenney told her son, 12, to go to a neighbor to call 911, and as the boy was \u201cleaving the house, he hears a gunshot,\u201d Grady added.
Responding deputies found Crystal Kenney\u2019s body and her critically wounded 13-year-old daughter, officials said. Deputies also found the couple\u2019s baby girl asleep in her crib, unharmed.
\u201cThat\u2019s a Christmas miracle\u201d the 13-year-old girl wasn\u2019t killed, Judd said. \u201cJason shot her twice and intended to kill her.\u201d
The girl, who was shot in the face but is expected to survive, had the strength to speak to investigators.
\u201cShe said, \u2018I begged him, don\u2019t shoot me, don\u2019t shoot me, don\u2019t shoot me, and he shot me anyway,\u201d according to Judd.
The shooter fled, called his sister in upstate New York and told her, \u201cI\u2019ve done something very, very bad, very bad\u201d and \u201cThis is the last time you\u2019ll ever talk to me,\u201d according to Judd.
\u201cYou\u2019ll see me on the news, but I am not going to jail. I\u2019m not going to jail for the rest of my life,\u201d he told his sister, according to Judd.
When deputies tracked down the shooter at his late father\u2019s home, they heard a single gunshot come from the property\u2019s shed, Judd said.
Back at the couple\u2019s house, deputies found an undated note from Crystal Kenney telling her husband, \u201cYou know you\u2019re drinking, you\u2019re using cocaine again,\u201d Judd said, quoting the note.
\u201cThis is not the way the family should be,\u201d she allegedly wrote. \u201cYou need God.\u201d
Deputies cannot determine when the note was written.
\u201cWe don\u2019t know when she wrote the note. It\u2019s not dated. There\u2019s no time, there\u2019s no indication, but it was open,\u201d Judd said. \u201cSo did she write it as they argued earlier in the evening? Or had it been some period of time? We can\u2019t determine that.\u201d
The woman\u2019s family had said she was a regular victim of domestic violence by her husband \u2014 though there had been no such reports to local authorities, Judd said.
\u201cFrankly, I don\u2019t want to sound sinister, but the only thing he did right that night was shoot himself after those horrible deeds,\u201d Judd said.
Stephanie Rourie, the victim\u2019s sister, promised to keep Crystal\u2019s memory alive.
\u201cI would tell my sister that I\u2019m sorry that this happened to you. You didn\u2019t deserve this. I promise I will love your babies so hard,\u201d Rourie told NBC affiliate WFLA<\/a>.
\u201cThe world deserves to know your story and the type of person you were. Her babies will never not know the type of mother she was. The love and the strength she had for them. They will know that. That will never stop.\u201d
