Christmas Day brought severe stormy weather to parts of the United States, causing delays and cancellations for hundreds of holiday travelers attempting to return home.
The Upper Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic experienced a white Christmas with a mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet<\/a>. A second system is expected to bring more wintry weather and several inches of snow over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Meanwhile in Southern California, historic rainfall<\/a> from an atmospheric river flooded streets and caused mass power outages and mudslides. Cities like Los Angeles, Burbank and Santa Barbara saw a record-breaking amount of rain on the holiday itself.
By 1:30 p.m. ET on Dec. 26, there were over 4,000 U.S. flights delayed and more than 1,300 canceled, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware<\/a>. New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and LaGuardia Airport are the most impacted, accounting for 22%, 17% and 18% of canceled outbound flights, respectively.

Travelers whose flights are canceled for any reason are entitled to a full refund if they either decide to not fly or refuse compensation like credits or vouchers, according to the Department of Transportation<\/a>. If they do continue with their journey, then they’re entitled to penalty-free rebooking.
Since weather is considered outside an airline’s control, travelers aren’t entitled to anything extra if their flight is canceled or delayed, such as a hotel stay.
Travelers can also check the DOT’s consumer dashboard<\/a> to see what their airline has committed to offering during delays and cancellations.
