Police say the surviving alleged Bondi Beach gunman has been charged. It comes as the first funerals are being held for the 15 victims of the mass shooting, including British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger.

We’re pausing our coverage for now of the aftermath of Sunday’s antisemitic terror attack in Bondi.

It’s a quiet, sleepy neighbourhood where the family of Sajid Akram lives. 
His elder brother, Shahid Akram, is a GP, and his wife, Dr Nuzhath Sultana, and two children live in the double-storey beige coloured home in the Tolichowki area. 
There is a padlock on the main gate, with curtains drawn and no lights on. 
The family was last seen on Tuesday morning. 
Neighbours are reluctant to speak of the family; some only got to know of them after the attack. 
One, who didn’t want to be identified, said that the family “never interacted with anyone and kept to themselves: it is very strange that in a Muslim colony this family has not interacted with neighbours or any of us”.
A guard of the colony said Dr Shahid would seldom walk around in the colony. He added that he does not remember any gathering taking place at their home. 
In a statement, the Telangana Police said the family members have expressed no knowledge of his radical mindset or activities, nor of the circumstances that led to his radicalisation. 
The police have no adverse record against Sajid Akram during his stay in India prior to his departure in 1998. 
And the factors that led to the radicalisation of Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed,  appear to have no connection with India or any local influence in Telangana. 
Telangana Police remain committed to cooperating with central agencies and other counterparts, as and when required, the statement read. 
The Metropolitan and Greater Manchester police forces have said they will arrest people holding placards and chanting the phrase “globalise the intifada”.
The two forces said the recent terrorist attack in Australia and the Heaton Park Synagogue attack in Manchester have made Jewish communities across the UK “worried and sacred”.
“We know communities are concerned about placards and chants such as ‘globalise the intifada’ and those using it at future protests or in a targeted way should expect the Met and GMP to take action,” the forces said in a joint statement.
“Violent acts have taken place, the context has changed – words have meaning and consequence. We will act decisively and make arrests.” 
Police have already stepped up visible patrols and protective security measures around synagogues, schools, and community venues in London and Greater Manchester.
For context: <\/b>“Globalise the intifada” is a controversial slogan calling for the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation to become a worldwide movement.
It’s widely interpreted as a call for violence, including against Jews globally, due to the history of violent Palestinian resistance during past Intifadas.
More now on the activity of the suspects before the shooting, and their links to the Philippines (see our earlier post at 11.30 for more on this).
Sky News can now report that the Akrams stayed at the GV Hotel in Davao from November 1 to November 28, according to a source at the hotel 
The source also confirmed that the police visited the site this afternoon.
The pair only left their rooms for meals, and added that they were respectful to the hotel staff, the source added.
No one was seen visiting the suspects, they said.<\/p>\n

As we reported earlier, the funerals of the Bondi Beach shooting victims began today.
Two Sydney rabbis, one of them London-born, were remembered by hundreds of mourners today.
They were described by those who knew them as kind and curious men who would be dearly missed by loved ones.
‘Biggest regret’<\/b>
A synagogue in Bondi was overflowing with attendees for the funeral of Rabbi Eli Schalnger today.
It took place a short distance from where he was shot and killed.
Often speaking through tears, his father-in-law, Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, expressed his “biggest regret” was that he “could have done more” to tell him “how much we love him”.
“I hope he knew that. I’m sure he knew it,” he added. “But I think it should’ve been said more often.”
‘Incredible partnership’<\/b>
A funeral for a second rabbi, Yaakov Levitan, a 39-year-old father of four, was held at Macquarie Park, in northwest Sydney, later in the day.
The two men had worked together at the Chabad of Bondi and had wives who had been best friends since school, the services were told.
“Yaakov and Eli had an incredible partnership. Eli had the visions and ideas and Yaakov figured out how to get it done,” said Rabbi Yakov Lieder, in an online obituary published on a Chabad website.
Return to Bondi planned<\/b>
Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, Schlanger’s father-in-law, told the service Jewish people should not be scared of visiting Bondi Beach, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, in the wake of Sunday’s mass shooting. 
He said local rabbis would organise an event for the end of Hanukkah to light eight candles this Sunday at the scene of the tragedy.
The president of the Philippines has defended his country after it emerged to the two Bondi Beach suspects travelled there a month before the attack.
Speaking today in a news briefing, a spokesperson for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr says:
\u201cThe president strongly rejects the sweeping statement and the misleading characterisation of the Philippines as the ISIS training hotspot.”
Our Asia correspondent Cordelia Lynch<\/a><\/b> reported yesterday that 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed arrived in the Philippines on 1 November and left on 28 November.
Lynch said that Sajid used an Indian passport and Naveed an Australian passport, with their end destination stated as Davao.
Some media reports have suggested links between Australian PM Anthony Albanese’s allegations that the suspects were motivated by Islamic State ideology and the trip to the country.
This has not been proven and Naveed will face a trial.
In a statement, the Philippines’ National Security Council adds:
“Philippine authorities in coordination with international partners continue to verify all available information but no evidence has been presented to support claims that the country was used for terrorist training.”
Ahead of the third test of the Ashes in Adelaide, a minute’s silence was held to commemorate the victims of Sunday’s attack.
Naveed Akram was charged with 59 offences this morning after waking up from a coma in hospital yesterday.
These included committing a terrorist act and 15 counts of murder.
His lawyer did not enter any pleas, or request Akram’s release on bail during a video court appearance from hospital earlier, according to a court statement.
Akram was represented by Legal Aid NSW, which has a policy of refusing media comment on behalf of clients. 
He is expected to remain under police guard in hospital until he is well enough to be transferred to a prison

Bystanders confront gunmen<\/b>
At least three people tried to confront the gunmen during the attack.
Ahmed al Ahmed, a shopkeeper, was getting coffee with a friend when the attack took place and he intervened, disarming one gunman. Ahmed is now recovering in hospital.
He wasn’t the only one who tried to help. 
Boris and Sofia Gurman tried to confront one of the attackers, but were shot and killed.

Tightening gun laws and pressure of antisemitism<\/b>
Australia is now looking to tighten its gun laws after the attack.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is proposing a limit on the number of guns someone can own and reviews of licences over time.
Opposition politicians have indicated they support the measures.
However, the government has also come under pressure for its handling of antisemitic incidents. Australia has seen repeated antisemitic attacks in the last few years.
