It said Thai forces had launched attacks on its troops on Monday and Cambodia had not retaliated, despite \u201cprovocative actions for many days\u201d.<br \/>Four Cambodian civilians were killed in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces, according to Cambodia\u2019s information minister, Neth Pheaktra.<br \/>Six weeks ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/26\/trump-oversees-thailand-cambodia-ceasefire-signing-as-asia-tour-gets-under-way\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Trump oversaw the signing of a ceasefire agreement<\/a> he brokered to end a five-day war that erupted in July. At least 48 people were killed in the conflict and 300,000 forced to flee their homes.<br \/>Tensions have remained high despite the ceasefire agreement, with both sides accusing each other other of violations, and Thailand announcing in November that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/15\/us-pressures-thailand-to-recommit-to-cambodia-ceasefire-with-threat-of-tariffs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">suspending the deal<\/a>.<br \/>Gen Chaiyapruek Duangprapat, the Thai army\u2019s chief of staff, said it was seeking to cripple Cambodia\u2019s military capability, with the aim of neutralising it as a threat in the long term.<br \/>Cambodia\u2019s former prime minister Hun Sen, who remains hugely influential and is the father of the current leader, Hun Manet, urged his country\u2019s forces to exercise restraint although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/thailand\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Thailand<\/a> was trying to \u201cpull us into retaliation\u201d.<br \/>\u201cThe red line for responding has already been set. I urge commanders at all levels to educate all officers and soldiers accordingly,\u201d Hun Sen said in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, said in a televised address the country did not want violence and denied initiating conflict. \u201cHowever, Thailand will not tolerate violations of its sovereignty and will proceed rationally and with due regard for the principles of peace, security and humanity,\u201d he said.<br \/>More than 385,000 civilians have been ordered to evacuate from border areas across four provinces, according to Thai authorities, who said about 50,000 people had left for shelters.<br \/>People also fled villages on the Cambodian side of the border, according to the country\u2019s ministry of information, which said 1,157 families had been evacuated to safe areas.<br \/>The Malaysian prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, who helped broker the original ceasefire, urged Thailand and Cambodia to avoid escalation, warning that the fighting risked \u201cunravelling the careful work that has gone into stabilising relations between the two neighbours\u201d.<br \/>\u201cWe urge both sides to exercise maximum restraint, maintain open channels of communication and make full use of the mechanisms in place,\u201d Anwar, the chair of the regional bloc Asean, said in a post online.<br \/>Tensions increased in May, when troops exchanged fire briefly at a contested area, killing a Cambodian soldier. This led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jun\/24\/thailand-army-closes-cambodia-border-crossings-as-territorial-tensions-escalate-paetongtarn-shinawatra-hun-sen\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">series of tit-for-tat actions<\/a> by both governments and escalated into conflict in July.
