Will Russia agree? Is a deal close?
It didn’t sound like it.
There was plenty of conciliatory language at the start of his news conference, which was designed to show a willingness to reach an agreement.
Trump’s plan can provide “the basis for future agreements”, he said. Russia is ready for “serious” discussions. He even expressed a willingness to discuss European security.
But “discuss” doesn’t mean “agree”, and it certainly doesn’t mean “compromise”.
And, as the questions grew more specific and the focus turned to the various sticking points in a peace deal, the Kremlin leader’s language hardened, revealing a familiar theme.
On the most contentious point of territory, he described recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea and the Donbas as a “key point” to the negotiations with the US.
That recognition, remember, was one of the proposals that made the initial 28-point peace plan so unpalatable for Ukraine.
They’ve managed to get it removed from the latest draft, but it’s clear Putin wants it back in.
On this issue, there’s clearly still no middle ground.
And he also had a warning for Kyiv and its European allies regarding their demands for a ceasefire: “Ukrainian troops must withdraw from the territories they hold, and then the fighting will cease. If they don’t leave, then we shall achieve this by armed means.”
It doesn’t sound like the language of someone who wants peace.
It sounds like someone who won’t stop until they have what they want. Someone whose core demands remain undiluted.
Whether it’s on the battlefield or at the negotiating table, Russia is still pursuing a victory.
Putin also reiterated a long-standing gripe over the legitimacy of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presidency, claiming it means a legally-binding deal with Ukraine is impossible as things stand.
It sounded suspiciously like Moscow’s latest play for time. It’s not Russia’s fault there’s no peace plan – it’s the legal small print.
So when US envoy Steve Witkoff comes to Moscow next week for talks in the Kremlin, it seems very unlikely he’ll leave with an unconditional agreement to America’s latest peace plan.
A Ukrainian man, allegedly behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in September 2022, has been handed over to German authorities today.
German federal prosecutors confirmed the extradition after an Italian court approved it last week.
Explosions destroyed the pipeline in the Baltic Sea and largely severed Russian gas transit to Europe, despite the country already stopping most of its deliveries.
The Kremlin and Western countries labelled the incident as an act of sabotage, and investigators spent years attempting to piece together who was behind it.
The suspect, known as Serhii K under German privacy laws, denies any role in the attack. His lawyer Nicola Canestrini says he is confident his client will be acquitted at trial.
Prosecutors in Germany accuse Serhii K of belonging to a group which planted devices on the pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic.
He was detained in Italy in August and is facing charges of collusion to cause an explosion, anti-constitutional sabotage and destruction of important structures.
According to Deepstate, a Ukrainian battlefield analysis site mapping the frontline using open-source data, Kyiv came close to losing the city of Huliaipole this week.
It says the situation there has now been “stabilised” and Russia’s advance has been “significantly slowed” in the small city in the eastern Zaporizhzhia region.
In a post on Telegram, Deepstate says Ukraine suffered a series of losses in its positions during fighting, before reinforcements were sent in.
However, after one brigade lost its commander, Deepstate says Ukrainian forces decided to retreat, but “incidents of friendly fire were recorded” as they did.
It also claims that five captured soldiers were “executed” by Russia.
It adds: “The enemy has significantly slowed its advance toward Huliaipole, and a new defensive line has been established.”
By Siobhan Robbins, Europe correspondent
If you’re still under any illusions about how seriously Ukraine’s allies view the wider threat from Russia, the wave of countries bringing back military service should help clarify that.
France is the latest, today announcing a new national service for over 18s.
Ahead of the plan being unveiled, President Emmanuel Macron said: “If the French want to protect ourselves, we must show that we are not weak in the face of one power that threatens us the most.”
That threat primarily comes from Russia, a country that numerous military chiefs have warned may be ready to attack a NATO member by 2030.
In essence, with today’s announcement, Mr Macron is trying to prepare a force to help protect France if attacked.
We’ve got some more comments to bring you now from Western leaders following Vladimir Putin’s comments on the proposed peace deal.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told a news conference in Berlin: “Now it is up to Russia to come to [the] negotiating table.”
“Ukraine needs strong armed forces, and if a peace agreement is reached… Ukraine will continue to need strong armed forces and reliable security guarantees from its partners.”
This strong Ukrainian army, Merz says, is the most important guarantee.
The US-Russia peace plan called for a Ukrainian army capped at 600,000 people, while the European counterproposals put the peacetime figure at 800,000 personnel.
Meanwhile, NATO chief Mark Rutte says there’s “tremendous renewed energy” around the Ukrainian peace process, which he credits Donald Trump as being responsible for.
Watch Rutte speaking below…
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has wished Donald Trump, his wife and the American people a happy Thanksgiving.
He also shared Ukraine’s glowing appreciation for ongoing US support to Kyiv in a post on social media:
“We are very glad that our relationship is constructive and look forward to further positive progress in diplomacy – to finally end for good Russia’s war against our people.”

A million thank yous
Relations between Trump and Zelenksyy have been bumpy over the years, especially in 2025 since the former’s return to the White House.
Trump infamously berated his Ukrainian counterpart in the Oval Office in February during a visit from the Ukrainian, in which vice president JD Vance suggested Zelesnkyy had not shown enough gratitude to the US for its support to Kyiv.
Since then, Zelenskyy has regularly made a note of expressing his sincerest thanks to Trump, his administration and the American people, during his subsequent trips to the US and on social media.
But even that hasn’t been enough. On Sunday, Trump, in a post on social media about the war, said that Ukraine’s leadership “has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts”.
We can bring you these latest pictures from the frontline now showing Ukrainian troops carrying out a mission.
They were near the town of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region.
Ukraine is still in dire need of further financial support from allies, officials warn.
Kyiv has issued a fresh appeal to the EU to unlock billions of dollars of frozen Russian assets and use them to fund a loan to back its fight against Russia.
It comes after Ukraine secured a preliminary approval for $8.2bn (£6.19bn) from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help the country maintain macroeconomic stability and strengthen public finances.
Despite the programme, Ukraine’s finance ministry says the need for “timely, large-scale external financing” remains “critical”.
Foreign minister Andrii Sybiha has called on Ukraine’s EU partners to approve unlocking the frozen Russian assets.
