Our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett<\/a> says news of a refined peace plan drafted by the US and Ukraine comes after “a dizzying 24, 48 hours of diplomacy”.
But there are still plenty of unknowns about exactly what the plan will propose.
“Supposedly it offers strength and security guarantees, but the details are scant,” he says.
“We still don’t really know how they’re going to get around the key points of differences, and what Ukraine doesn’t like about the current offer, particularly on the issue of territory. That’s the most thorny issue.”

We’ve had positive statements from two European countries this morning after the US-Ukraine talks in Geneva. 
Germany’s foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, said the talks had produced a “decisive success” for Europe.
“All issues concerning Europe, including those concerning NATO, have been removed from this plan – this is a decisive success that we achieved yesterday,” he said on German radio.
“It was clear from the outset, as we have repeatedly said, that any agreement must not be reached over the heads of Europeans and Ukrainians.”
Meanwhile, Alexander Stubb, the Finnish president, said he spoke to Volodymyr Zelenskyy this morning. Yesterday’s negotiations were “a step forward”, he said, but “major issues” still needed to be resolved.
Stubb added that any decision within the remit of EU or NATO would be discussed and decided by its members in “a separate track”.
A joint statement was issued by the US and Ukraine last night after representatives of both countries met in Geneva.
It said the talks were “constructive, focused and respectful”.
“The discussions showed meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps,” the statement said.
“They reaffirmed that any future agreement must fully uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and deliver a sustainable and just peace.
“As a result of the discussions, the parties drafted an updated and refined peace framework.”
Both sides agreed to continue “intensive work” on joint proposals in the coming days.
Rubio: We can get something done<\/b>
US secretary of state Marco Rubio spoke to reporters earlier yesterday after the talks in the Swiss city.
He struck an upbeat tone as he insisted both sides had made progress on the peace plan.
“I feel very optimistic that we can get something done here because we made a tremendous amount of progress,” Rubio said.
He added: “I don’t want to declare victory or finality here. There’s still some work to be done, but we are much further ahead today at this time than we were when we began this morning and where we were a week ago for certain.”
Rubio stopped short of committing to Donald Trump’s Thursday Thanksgiving deadline for Ukraine to reach an agreement on the plan, instead saying he hoped an agreement would be reached “soon”.

Peace plan<\/b>
Kyiv was handed a 28-point peace plan reportedly drafted by a blacklisted Russian official, Kirill Dmitriev, a US real estate developer-come-envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Trump endorsed the plan and told Volodymyr Zelenskyy he had until this Thursday (Thanksgiving) to accept it, before rowing back to say it was not his “final offer”.
US sources said the plan blindsided the State Department and other official channels, and raised alarm among even Republican politicians.
“This so-called ‘peace plan’ has real problems, and I am highly sceptical it will achieve peace,” said senator Roger Wicker, Republican chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. 
For his part, Putin said the plan could serve as “the basis for the final peaceful settlement”.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would not betray Ukraine’s national interest as he mulled over the proposal, but warned the country faces the choice of losing a major partner or its dignity.

Europe scrambles<\/b>
European leaders, while careful not to criticise Donald Trump, raised concerns.
In a joint statement, they said proposed limitations on the Ukrainian army would leave it vulnerable to attack, and insisted Ukraine’s borders must not be altered.
Elements of the plan relating to the EU and NATO required their consent as well, they added.
Allies drafted a counter proposal to present to the US and Ukraine at talks in Geneva yesterday.
From South Africa to Geneva<\/b>
The hastily arranged talks in Geneva were put together as many of Kyiv’s allies gathered for the G20 in South Africa.
The issue largely overshadowed the summit.
In Geneva, a series of meetings took place between the US, Ukrainian and European representatives from Saturday night into Sunday.
It culminated in two statements from US secretary of state Marco Rubio, one made alongside Ukraine’s Andrii Yermak.
In his first appearance, Rubio told reporters the US was making “some changes” to the plan, seemingly based on Ukrainian suggestions.
Then he came back out to say: “I feel very optimistic that we can get something done here because we made a tremendous amount of progress.”
While Rubio stressed negotiators needed time, he struck an optimistic tone (if light on the details).
Both him and Yermak said that work would continue.
And in a joint statement issued late last night, Kyiv and Washington said they had drafted an “updated and refined peace framework” after the talks, which were “constructive, focused, and respectful, underscoring the shared commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace”.

Battlefield<\/b>
Meanwhile, away from the diplomatic developments, fighting continued on the frontlines. 
It was a week of territorial claims and counterclaims, too.
Russia said its forces captured a string of frontline settlements in eastern Ukraine as it undertakes a slow westwards advance through the Donetsk region.
Moscow is attempting to secure control of the entire eastern Donbas area, which includes Donetsk and Luhansk.
Among the disputed villages and cities were the largely destroyed Kupiansk and the logistics hub, Pokrovsk. Russia said it had captured the former and 70% of the latter, which Ukraine denied.
Ternopil mourns<\/b>
The biggest attack to take place over the past week was a Russian drone and missile barrage against the western city of Ternopil.
Some 33 people were killed, including six children, on Wednesday night.
Another six people are still missing after what Volodymyr Zelenskyy called a “vile” strike.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio, who headed up the US delegation in Geneva today, was optimistic after talks with Ukraine.
He said that the US was making “some changes” to its peace plan after talks with Ukraine in his first appearance.
Later, not only did he hail “a tremendous amount of progress”, he added: “I don’t want to declare victory or finality here. There’s still some work to be done, but we are much further ahead today at this time than we were when we began this morning and where we were a week ago for certain.”
Despite his optimism, he didn’t offer much in the way of specifics when asked by reporters.
We expect talks to continue, it’s just not sure whether they will carry on in Geneva and who will be taking part.
Europe counters<\/b>
Europe was left scrambling after the draft US-Russia peace plan was published.
But Kyiv’s allies came up with a counter proposal.
In these, a few top lines stood out:
‘NO GRATITUDE’<\/b>
All these developments came after Donald Trump took to social media to criticise Ukraine’s leadership.
He claimed it showed “ZERO GRATITUDE” to the US – something we first heard back in February when he publicly berated Zelenskyy.
‘Diplomacy has been reinvigorated’<\/b>
Speaking of the Ukrainian leader, while not present at the talks, he was being kept updated and posted repeatedly on social media through today.
“Diplomacy has been reinvigorated – and this is good,” Zelenskyy said.
In another post he added: “It is important that there is dialogue with the American representatives, and there are signals that President Trump’s team is listening to us.”
Ukraine will be hoping that the US president keeps on listening.
Over the past 24 hours, the hastily arranged summit in Geneva has seen representatives from the US, Europe and Ukraine descend on the Swiss city.
They have held a series of meetings trying to coordinate progress on a possible peace plan.
Hanging over it all is (another) Donald Trump-imposed deadline.
Here are some of the meetings that have taken place:
Last night<\/b>, army secretary Dan Driscoll held several meetings with a Ukrainian delegation in Geneva, our US partner NBC News understands.
A US official tells them these talks were “good”.
Then, this morning<\/b>, NBC reports that three of the most senior members of the US delegation (Rubio, Driscoll and Witkoff) held coordination meetings at the InterContinental Hotel.
Most of these discussions were unilateral.
Around lunchtime<\/b>, still at the InterContinental Hotel, Rubio and Discroll also met with European officials, our Europe producer Simone Baglivo understands.
Next up<\/b>, the US then met with the Ukrainian delegation at the US Mission in Geneva (see our 16.52 post for the outcome of that).
Both sides described these as “constructive”.
It was after these we heard from Marco Rubio and Andrii Yermak.
Heading through this afternoon and evening, more formal talks were ongoing between Ukraine and the US.
A US official tells NBC that the afternoon talks were “detailed discussions about the peace agreement,” adding:
“It was productive and even conclusive in some areas. There’s a formal meeting between the two delegations where they will be ironing out the details of the agreement.”
Then (perhaps today’s final meeting), the delegations from Washington and Kyiv enjoyed dinner at an Italian restaurant (see our 21.04 post for more).
While it is expected that talks will continue tomorrow, it isn’t clear who will be taking part in it.

We’ve witnessed a day of determined and decidedly frantic diplomacy in this well-heeled city. 
Camera crews were perched on street corners and long convoys of black vehicles swept down Geneva’s throughfares as the Ukrainians worked hard to keep the Americans on side. 
Secretary of state Marco Rubio did not want to go into details at a press ‘gaggle’ held at the US Mission this evening, but he seemed to think they had made more progress in the last 96 hours than the previous 10 months combined.
The Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy also seemed satisfied enough, posting on Telegram that there were “signals President Trump’s team is hearing us” after a day of “numerous meetings and negotiations.”
That said, we are a long way from the finish line here – something Rubio acknowledged when he said that any proposal agreed here would have to be handed over to the Russians. 
At that point, negotiations to stop the war would surely get tougher. 
President Putin has shown little or no inclination to stop the conflict thus far.
This, then, is the most important reason the Ukrainians seem determined to keep the Americans on side. 
While President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wasn’t present at talks today, he was said to be in touch with his team and posted about the peace efforts on social media throughout the day.
In his nightly address, the Ukrainian leader says there are signs that “President Trump’s team hears us.”
It comes as US secretary of state Marco Rubio hailed “productive” peace talks with Ukraine in Geneva (see our 19.39 post for more).
Also, it comes after Trump’s post on social media claiming Ukraine’s leadership had expressed “ZERO GRATITUDE”.
‘A day of many meetings’<\/b>
Zelenskyy describes today as “a day of many meetings and negotiations.”
He says that “a lot is changing”, but repeats Kyiv’s long-held line that it will never be an obstruction to peace.

Three people have been killed in a “massive” Russian drone attack on Kharkiv.
Several others were also injured, including children, in Ukraine’s second-largest city, according to local officials.
Kharkiv’s mayor Ihor Terekhov says in a post on Telegram that there were 15 strikes on the city, across six locations.
Kharkiv is located 18 miles (30km) from the Russian border and has withstood Russian attempts to capture it so far.
According to Reuters news agency, US and Ukrainian officials are discussing a potential visit for Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Washington.
This could take place as early as this week to discuss the peace plan with Trump himself, it adds.
Citing two sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reports that the main idea would be for Trump and Zelenskyy to discuss the most sensitive matters (such as territory) directly.
So far, there is no confirmed date.
During his second briefing with reporters earlier, Marco Rubio said some of the holdups were because of the need for “higher-level” decisions.
