We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<br \/><a href=\"\/topic\/ukraine\">Ukrainian<\/a> forces fired <a href=\"\/news\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-war-flamingo-cruise-missile-zelensky-b2812538.html\">Flamingo missiles<\/a> at <a href=\"\/news\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-drones-oil-refinery-b2860518.html\">Russian oil facilities<\/a> in a fresh wave of overnight strikes, the military has said on Thursday. <br \/>This included strikes on the Morskoy Neftyanoy oil terminal in <a href=\"\/topic\/crimea\">occupied Crimea <\/a>and an oil depot in occupied Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine\u2019s General Staff said. <br \/>The attack came as top military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said the Russian army overran three settlements in the southern <a href=\"\/topic\/zaporizhzhia\">Zaporizhzhia<\/a> region and Ukrainian units are locked in \u201cgrueling battles\u201d to repel the thrust.<br \/>\u201cLast night, several long-range strike systems were launched, including the domestically developed Flamingo, Bars and Lyutyi,\u201d the military said. <br \/>The scale of the damage is still being assessed, it added. <br \/>This comes as Ukrainian forces pulled back from several positions in the southern<a href=\"\/topic\/zaporizhzhia\"> Zaporizhzhia<\/a> region amid heavy fighting and adverse weather.<br \/><a href=\"\/topic\/russia\">Russia<\/a> is taking advantage of the weather to advance in small groups, moving on foot or motorcycles, with the adverse weather preventing Ukrainian forces from deploying drones against them.<br \/>After nearly four years of bitter war, Ukraine\u2019s defence industry has more understanding than most of the demands of the modern battlefield.<br \/>The latest innovation is a cruise missile with a range of 3,000km and a payload of over a tonne, used in strikes deep into Russian territory.<br \/>Where weapons from allies come with conditions, Kyiv can fire the FP-5 Flamingo missile at any target it wants.<br \/>With arms supplies from the West so uncertain, Volodymyr Zelensky has said Ukraine now makes about 60 per cent of its own weapons.<br \/><em>World affairs editor Sam Kiley reports from Kyiv:<\/em><br \/>Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has given an update on the frontline situation in Ukraine, as he visits the region of Zaporizhzhia just kilometres from Russian positions. <br \/>\u201cEastern Ukraine is, without a doubt, a major challenge,\u201d he said in an update on X. <br \/>\u201cAnd here, on the Orikhiv direction, it has always been intense.
