Lavrov ready to meet US sec of state<\/b>
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said he is ready to meet his US counterpart Marco Rubio. This came after reports that Lavrov was responsible for a summit being cancelled, which reportedly may have let to a rift with Vladimir Putin.

Donald Trump announced that he will nominate John Coale as special envoy to Minsk<\/b> – further stepping up bilateral diplomacy.
In an evening message, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has paid tribute to the State Emergency Service, the country’s civil defence, fire and rescue service.
“These days, repair crews are working almost around the clock in most regions, energy workers are on duty, communal services \u2013 everyone is involved,” the Ukrainian president wrote in a post on Telegram.
“The Russians have increased their strikes, boosted their strike force… And this means for us a need for greater air defense, larger equipment reserves, and clearer and more prompt work in the regions. 
“Today, I would like to acknowledge the workers of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine \u2013 they are always prompt.” 
Zelenskyy said the service was a model of how the work of all levels of government should be organized.
Belarus has been an important ally for Russia during its war against Ukraine, in particular by serving as a launchpad for Moscow’s full-scale invasion.
But in a developing side story to the war, Donald Trump has sought to foster closer ties with Belarus’ long-standing dictator Alexander Lukashenko in recent months.
This afternoon, Trump announced that he will nominate White House official John Coale as special envoy to Minsk – stepping up bilateral diplomacy.
Who is John Coale?<\/b>
Coale is a lawyer by training, who currently serves as Trump’s deputy special envoy to Ukraine. 
He helped broker several releases of Belarusian political prisoners, that came on Trump’s urging.
In return, the US lifted some sanctions on the Belarusian national airline Belavia, marking the first lifting of American sanctions since the start of the war.

What is Trump’s endgame?<\/b>
Observers are still working out what’s behind Trump’s ongoing push for prisoner releases and rapprochement with Putin ally Lukashenko, dubbed ‘Europe’s last dictator’.
Trump called Lukashenko before his Alaska meeting with Putin and sent Coale and Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg with gifts.
In his announcement of Coale’s nomination, Trump praised Lukashenko as “the Highly Respected President of Belarus”, thanking him for considering the release of 50 more prisoners.
“For Donald Trump, it could be an attempt to get closer to Vladimir Putin,” our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett<\/a><\/b> said previously.
“Lukashenko is a close ally of the Russian president and could provide a strategic back-channel through which to apply pressure on the Kremlin when it comes to peace talks.
“But it could be more selfish than that, and merely his latest attempt to secure the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Either way, the timing is curious to say the least.”

Away from the battlefield in Ukraine, the country’s Western allies have been starting to feel the fallout from Russia’s aggression more intensely in recent weeks.
Drone incidents across Europe have forced airports to suspend flights, some of which have been blamed on Russia.
The latest European country to experience this was Belgium, where NATO and the European Union are headquartered and Europe\u2019s biggest financial clearinghouse holding tens of billions of euros in frozen Russian assets.
In the past week, both Belgium\u2019s main international airports were forced to close temporarily due to drone incursions, which also affected military bases.
John Healey, the defence secretary, said today that he has directed a small team of RAF specialists to deploy in Belgium immediately.
“When our NATO allies call, we step up,” he said, adding that Belgium had requested urgent support to counter the drone threat.
The UK’s chief of defence staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, told Trevor Phillips on Sky News<\/strong><\/a> that the UK is also sending equipment after his Belgian counterpart had called him to request British support.
Belgian defence minister Theo Francken said that he believed that some incidents were part of \u201ca spying operation\u201d that could not have been done by amateurs.

We reported this morning that Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said he is ready to meet US secretary of state Marco Rubio.
This may well be an attempt of damage control after reports that Lavrov’s uncompromising stance prompted Donald Trump to cancel an American-Russian peace summit.
It appears that this has also caused a rift between Lavrov and Vladimir Putin.
Our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett<\/a> <\/b>analysed whether Russia’s foreign minister of 21 years has lost his seat at the top table.
He reports that present-day Kremlinologists are currently poring over footage from Wednesday’s landmark meeting of Russia’s Security Council, in which Vladimir Putin told his top officials to start drafting proposals for a possible nuclear weapons test.
But Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s veteran foreign minister, was conspicuously absent – the only permanent member of the Council not present.
That episode alone would have been enough to raise eyebrows, but Bennett has found more reason to suspect that Lavrov’s status may be slipping.

As the war in Ukraine drags on, its clear the conflict has seeped into every corner of Russian life including its sports. 
Earlier this week, Sky News published an exclusive report from a Russian sports festival in the south Russian town of Samara, which has seen some surprising modifications since the start of the war.
There is an ice hockey tournament, that involves veterans who have lost limps in Ukraine, as our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett<\/a><\/b> reported.

Another competition involves drones – which have become a common sight in the skies above Ukraine as Russia is targeting the country’s energy infrastructure.

Fishermen along France’s Brittany coast are sending Ukrainians tonnes of discarded netting, which can be repurposed to protect against Russian drone attacks.
Through a new charitable organisation set up by the fishermen, called Kernic Solidarites, two batches of nets measuring a total of 280km have been sent to Ukraine, according to The Guardian.
Ukrainian soldiers have been taking the strong netting, made from horse hair, and hanging it over roads which could be targeted by Russia’s exploding drones.
The makeshift tunnels are strong enough to withstand drone propellers and ultimately catch them before they go off.
The fishermen say it’s also a win for them, as their deep-sea fishing nets become too worn for purpose within two years and have to be replaced. 
Russian strikes have killed at least three people in the Donetsk Oblast over the past day, according to Ukrainian officials. 
Two of the deaths occurred in the city of Kostiantynivka and one in the town of Oleksandrivka, according to regional governor Vadym Filashkin.
He said another three people were wounded around Kostiantynivka, and three in the village of Kindrativka.
It comes after Russian forces launched 69 drones at Ukraine overnight, with 32 hitting nine locations across the country, according to Ukraine\u2019s air force.
That was down from the 458 drones and 45 missiles fired across the country overnight between Friday and Saturday, which killed seven people.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he has signed off on new sanctions against people working for Vladmir Putin.
He suggested he did so in retaliation against sanctions Russia put on Ukrainian officials, including its prime minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
Earlier this month, Russian media reported that her and a number of other lower ranking Ukrainian officials would have their non-cash funds and property in Russia frozen, and be prohibited from transferring capital out of the country.
Announcing his own country’s sanctions on X today, Zelenskyy did not detail what they would entail or name who they were against, though he did say those affected included:
On Remembrance Sunday, the chief of the British Armed Forces has suggested Russia’s invasion of Ukraine highlights that European countries are not as safe as they once were.
Earlier today, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton said: “This conflict reminds us that peace is never guaranteed. It [the UK] must be defended, and sometimes at great cost.”
He said defending the country was “not the responsibility of the military alone” but rather a “national endeavour” requiring investment, innovation, and support for the armed forces.
On Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips<\/a><\/b>, Sir Richard sounded more optimistic about the state of the war in Ukraine.
“Mr Putin right now is losing hundreds of thousands of soldiers,” he said.
“His nation is spending somewhere around 40% of its national income on defence.
“Putin strategically is seeing his war aims eroded. We’ve got a stronger NATO, a rearming, bigger NATO. “
He suggested we should be confident that NATO is “stronger and more capable than Russia” and that Russia is “losing from a strategic perspective, even if it’s making tactical gains on the ground in Ukraine”.
He credited the work the UK has done “as a nation and in our armed forces” to support Ukraine and help keep pressure on the Russians.
